When you know your job verlieren become, or it has already happened: Register immediately as unemployed in person, otherwise there is a risk of unemployment benefits being reduced or blocked periods.

By the way: The employment office does the conversion from “jobseeker” to “unemployed” automatically - so you don't have to worry about that, the name is automatically changed as soon as the time comes.

How is the employment office organized?

At every employment office you will find an information point in the entrance area - whether it is an open counter with friendly, smiling ladies or a glass case with a grumpy older gentleman - and here you will be told exactly where you have to go. Unfortunately, the employment offices are organized differently from place to place. In some employment offices, for example, you have to go to the clerk Adviser or intermediary who is responsible for the first letter of your surname in the alphabet, in other employment offices there are several clerks, performance advisers and employment agents and usually one employment adviser to one Team merged.

Each team is responsible for certain letters or a certain area (e.g. city districts) within the employment office district. Which team is responsible for you depends on your name or where you live, and reception will direct you there. Every time you visit the employment office, you go to this team again - whether it is to the clerk, employment agent or consultant. Incidentally, in many employment offices you only need an appointment with the employment advisor. Unfortunately, this sometimes also means that you have to accept long waiting times at the agent or clerk, depending on how many people are there. So don't plan your visits too tightly.

New customer centers

In many employment offices there are already the new customer centers, which should gradually make all agencies more customer-friendly. But this restructuring did not always work perfectly and some things still seem quite chaotic - overnight you cannot turn an authority into a service agency! So be patient with your employment office.

You will not simply be forwarded from reception, but first present your request here - you can imagine it as in a citizens' office in the town hall, where you can go without an appointment and may have to take a number. Small concerns are already dealt with at reception, more extensive ones Ask clarified in the entrance zone - if possible without any waiting times. However, if a specialist is required for mediation or cash payment, an appointment for a consultation will be made in the entrance zone. Here you can also do "preliminary work" - for example, record your data or have forms handed to you.

What does the BIS do?

In the career information center (BIZ) you can answer many questions yourself on computers or search for vacancies. You will also find numerous brochures from the employment office on various topics here. You can also contact the employment office by telephone via the ServiceCenter. All calls go here. The employees Employees accept information about changes of address or bank details by telephone, answer general questions or let the "customers“Send documents for consultations. Appointments for these talks can also be arranged. Many employment offices also have telephones that you can use to call the hotline.

Further information: Hotline numbers in the telephone book or on the website of your employment agency (via http://www.arbeitsagentur.de). Special hotlines on certain topics, such as unemployment benefit II (also in Internet).

If you are looking for a job, you need an appointment with the employment agency. The careers adviser will help you in your search for an apprenticeship. Only for complicated matters, e.g. if you have great difficulty finding a job or a Further Training or similar benefits, you need to make an appointment with the employment counselor. You benefit as "Customer“ Especially from the new organization: soon you may no longer have to wait for hours, the mediators and consultants no longer have to answer telephone inquiries during the conversation, they have more time for you and act this may also make it more relaxed overall - of course only if the organization runs smoothly.

What do the job centers do?

The job centers are responsible for all questions and applications relating to unemployment benefit II. A case manager is your personal contact there. In order to create the job centers, which in future will also take care of the previous recipients of social assistance, municipalities and districts have formed working groups together with the respective employment agencies. About the exact Implementation but is still being negotiated in many places. Maybe you will find your job center in the employment office in the future, in the neighboring town you would have to go to the town hall or the social welfare office. Your employment agency can help you, and in some places you can also find the contact persons for the working groups on the website.

If you are unemployed, you usually still report to the clerk assigned to you in the entrance zone. However, it is possible that this procedure Future is simplified. The clerk will also approve your unemployment benefit – ask for a corresponding application form when you register as unemployed.

In difficult cases, you can also see a performance advisor. But first we want to clarify whether you are entitled to unemployment benefits at all.

Are you entitled to unemployment benefits?

If you have registered as unemployed, the first, but not the only, condition is met in order to be entitled to unemployment benefit at all. The conditions are as follows:

The application for unemployment benefit

If you meet the conditions, you should ask for the application form on your first visit. The clerk will note the date of your personal unemployment registration on this form. In addition, further information such as length of employment, amount of gross wage, etc. made.

You will receive additional sheets for any special cases (e.g. for your health, nursing care and pension insurance). It is better to fill out the application at home. You probably don't have all the information in the Headthat the employment office requires. Take the time you need for this. There is no submission deadline. But: The faster you submit the application, the faster you will receive your unemployment benefit (retrospectively from the first day of unemployment, of course). Please bring the following with you when you drop off:

Caution: blocking times and cuts

When do which blocking periods and cancellations take effect? An overview.

In the event of dismissals

Hopefully you have registered as unemployed in good time. If not, the following applies:

Attention: It can happen that the unemployment benefit is not paid for a period of at least three, but usually for twelve weeks - depending on the type and number of "violations". Such a blocking period is not simply added to the period in which you receive unemployment benefit, but it shortens it accordingly. Nevertheless, only a blocking period is quite manageable if you cannot meet one or the other requirement of the employment office. However, you should definitely ensure that your blocked periods do not add up to a total of 21 weeks; even if you are in your Eyes just make a few little things wrong. Unfortunately, the employment office is not squeamish: If you have reached 21 weeks of blocking time, your unemployment benefit will be canceled completely.

During unemployment

Blocking periods and reductions can also be imposed on you later, during unemployment. One rule has been particularly tightened: you must not give the impression of being lazy. At least 15 hours a week you should try to find a new job and the employment office for its efforts to help you with the Job Search to help be available. This also includes going to your employment agency every three months without being specifically asked to do so. Use these dates to find a (new) job search tactic together.

You should be able to prove your own efforts because there will be blackouts if you don't do enough job hunting. You can usually prove this orally. You are on the safe side if you can present something in writing. Hence the advice: keep a kind of diary in which you record all your activities related to the job search. Such a diary has several advantages: you can present it as evidence to your employment agency and, actually more importantly, it helps you with the Planning and conduct your job search and increases your chances of success.

Keep a "diary"

A diary is extremely helpful for organizing your job search – especially if you light to lose overview.

You should be available every working day at the address you give to the employment office. That doesn't mean that you have to sit around at home all day - going shopping is "allowed". If you have a cell phone, give the number. Otherwise, an answering machine will also help. If necessary, you can then call them back, make an appointment or go directly to the employment office. It is difficult to travel: You are only allowed to go away for a maximum of three weeks per year. However, such “vacation” must be approved. A good justification is very important: In the event of illness in the Family the chances are good, but rather bad for a pleasure trip to Mallorca. Incidentally, in the first three months of your unemployment, your job placement officer will take a very close look. If you leave without telling anyone and get caught, your unemployment benefit will be canceled entirely - from the first day of vacation. Even if you move: inform the employment office immediately.

As you can see, you have a lot to prove. In order not to lose the overview, you should make written notes. This not only helps to present “evidence” to the employment office and to avoid blocking times. You can also do your job search at the same time to organize. The same applies here: If you have an overview, your chances are far better than if you are disorganized and miss appointments! A school exercise book in DIN A4 format, for example, has proven to be practical, in which you create a table in which you enter all the important dates, names and dates in bullet points. If you are familiar with the PC, you can of course create your own table.

What obligations do you have to fulfill?

Among the things that the employment office might want from you is a medical or psychological examination. Even if you find that superfluous and none Lust have to go: do it anyway. If you refuse, you give the job center the impression that you are not "willing" to do whatever it takes to get a job again. Anyone who refuses will be punished with a ban.

However, the employment office may also want you to take part in training, education or further training measures. Again, if you don't go, show them clear Your unwillingness to cooperate. Of course, there may be further training that seems completely pointless to you, but if you are already required to do so, you can also see it positively: Take the opportunity to learn something new. However, if you can give an important reason, you can also refuse without having to fear blocking times. However, the employment office only accepts a few arguments – which ones, we want to briefly discuss.

You must actually be willing to accept any "reasonable employment" that corresponds to your ability to work. This means for recipients of unemployment benefit (other regulations apply to unemployment benefit II): The job offered does not have to be yours Vocational Training still correspond to your previous working conditions. From the fourth month of unemployment at the latest, a move is generally “reasonable”; before that only if you cannot be expected to find a job within the “reasonable commuting range”. When you go to the new Workplace if you work up to six hours, you have to drive more than two hours and if you work more than six hours, you have to drive two and a half hours, your job is beyond what is reasonable - and you can refuse (exception: such long driving times are normal in your region).

The diary"

Create a (punched) A4 notebook as a diary. Also create a DIN A4 folder, which you divide into at least six areas (e.g Checklists and notes on the diary, receipts, applications, correspondence with companies or training institutions, etc., correspondence with the employment office, information material). File and number all lists, receipts, etc. neatly and by date. Always keep the diary and folder together, it is best to attach the diary as well. Enter all shorter information in the table.

When can you refuse an offered position?

You can also refuse a job if the net salary is significantly lower (up to 20% in the first three months of unemployment, up to 30% from the second quarter) than the average gross salary, which is the basis for calculating your unemployment benefit, or if that salary (from the seventh month) is below the unemployment benefit, or if the employment violates legal, collective bargaining or company agreements on working conditions or occupational safety regulations.

A good argument for declining a job can be your family, for example if you are around someone (children or elderly People) have to take care of. But beware: If you have little or no time for work as a result, you are not available to the employment office as a job seeker, or at least not all the time - and it is possible that your unemployment benefit will be reduced or cancelled. That is in the individual case for sure also with your case worker or benefit advisor, but still be careful what you give as a reason. On the other hand, if you refuse a job for justified health reasons, you do not have to worry about any blocking periods.

After all, reasonableness is also about your ability to work, and that is to be understood quite literally: If you are physically unable to do a job, it is unreasonable for you - and you can refuse. However, you have to prove the physical impairment with a medical certificate. If you can prove that you cannot do heavy physical work because of severe damage to the spine, the employment office will accept it. However, if you are offered a job as a window cleaner, you should be careful if you reject it with the (false) reason: "I'm afraid of heights". The employment office has its own doctors and psychologists and will likely send you for an examination to verify your statement.

Note the reasons why you can refuse “reasonable” work. Forhealthyhealth reasons you need a medical certificate.

How long do you receive how much unemployment benefits?

Unemployment benefit is paid monthly. The basis for calculation is usually the average gross salary in your previous year of work ("accounting periods with compulsory insurance that are wholly or partly in the last 52 weeks before unemployment"). However, if you had various jobs during this time, none of which lasted 39 weeks (minimum period), the employment office bases its calculations on the tariff for the occupation in which you are being placed.

Example

You worked for 9 months (39 weeks) subject to compulsory insurance and earned _ 1500 gross monthly. You were sick for the remaining 3 months of the year, but received sick pay based on your monthly salary. The employment office is now assuming a total of _ 18.000 for the whole year, which is then divided by 52 (weeks) - the result is a base wage of around _ 346,15 per week. From this sum, the employment office then calculates a “flat-rate net salary” by adding

deducts the wage tax of your tax class (without tax exemptions), the average social security contribution and the church tax. Finally, you will receive 60 percent of this net salary as unemployment benefit, with at least one child you will receive 67 percent.

How long you receive unemployment benefit, the so-called entitlement period, depends on your own Age depending on how long you've paid into Social Security over the past seven years. The table below shows who can receive unemployment benefit and for how long. From February 2006, all unemployed persons under the age of 55 will only be paid unemployment benefit for a maximum of 12 months, those over 55 will only receive it for a maximum of 18 months. You also have health, nursing care, pension and accident insurance through the employment office.

Part-time job allowed!

You may also work while receiving unemployment benefit – self-employed or as an employee. You must report this secondary employment immediately; it may not exceed 15 hours per week. If this limit is not adhered to, there is no longer any entitlement to unemployment benefit due to the lack of unemployment. A part-time job is worthwhile: 20 percent of unemployment benefits, but at least 165 _ per month, are not taken into account; anything above that reduces the unemployment benefit accordingly. Take advantage of this opportunity to earn extra money and stay active at the same time - you won't be able to completely retire from working life either feel probably feel better if you do at least "something".

Unemployment benefit II

Since January 2005, unemployment benefits and social assistance have no longer been separated, but are paid out as unemployment benefit II by the job centers and financed by the federal government. You can apply for this basic security from your personal contact, the case manager.

To do this, you must be in need of help, between 15 and 65 years of age and of course able to work, i.e. have a valid work permit and be able to work at least three hours a day (obstacles: illness or disability).

What is paid?

Unemployment benefit II is a fixed amount: At the beginning of each month there is €345 (West) or €331 (East). In the event of illness, payment continues for six weeks. If you live with people who are not able to work (e.g. underage children, partner, parents, etc.) or underage children with their own home but without Income have, form a community of needs. If you cannot work, you will receive social benefit: 80 percent of the unemployment benefit II (children under 14 years 60 percent). The state also takes care of health, nursing care and pension insurance.

Additional Services

Cash benefits, which you can also apply for, but which in total may not exceed your unemployment benefit II:

If you have kids

From the 13th week of pregnancy, you can receive a supplement of 17 percent on social or unemployment benefit II. In any case, you will receive child benefit, up to the third child €154 per month per child, for the fourth and each additional child €179. With social or unemployment benefit II, the child benefit is not taken into account as your income, but as that of your child. If you are enough for yourself Money (e.g. through your job), but it is not enough for your underage child, you can get a child allowance of 140 €/month in addition to child benefit, but only for three years (but not if you receive social security or unemployment benefit II!) .

You can also apply for BAföG for school education (information: http://www.das-neue-bafoeg.de). If your child does not receive BAföG because they still live at home, they can apply for social allowance at the above rates up to their 14th birthday. Even if your child goes to school, they are considered to be able to work from the age of 14, provided they are not sick or disabled. Therefore, it must then apply for unemployment benefit II. As part of such services, school trips can also be taken over. If you raise your child alone, there is a 36% surcharge for a child under the age of seven, with two children or more, the surcharge continues to be paid until the age of 16. However, you do not get a special supplement if your child is disabled!

Earnings and wealth

Since the state wants to bring you back to your wages and bread, you are allowed to receive unemployment benefit II as well to earn. The following are initially deducted from the gross salary: Costs for social security and various insurances (e.g. Riesterpension, private health, car, liability, household and accident insurance), for work materials and clothing, union membership or a second household. The following are then deducted from the remaining net amount:

So the more you earn, the more will be deducted from you. But when you work, you stay active, feel better and your chances of getting a real job again are greater. By the way, hiding revenue or assets does not help. If this is discovered, your unemployment benefit II can be reduced. And: Unfortunately, income also includes maintenance, non-state pensions, rental and interest income (without tax allowances, but after deducting the costs you incur as a result).

Assets include not only cash and all financial investments, but everything you own at home and abroad and its value then in the on account is included. But no Anxiety, it's not that bad - you can keep the following of all your possessions:

Unfortunately, you have to use up anything that exceeds these allowances before you can receive unemployment benefit II.

Entry fee, one-euro jobs and other obligations

Unemployment benefit II is by no means just about cash benefits, asset transfers, etc .: The main task of the case manager is to get you a job. To do this, you and he will conclude an integration agreement (duration: 6 months), which you will work out and sign together. He is committed to offering you jobs that meet your needs and the demands of the job market. You undertake to participate in the job search. Specifically, this means: If you are lucky, you will receive an education voucher and can take part in further training, or you will receive an entry fee to bridge the gap between starting a new job or starting a business. But be careful: That is only at the discretion of the case manager, you have no legal rights (more on this in the chapter "Education, further education and training").

However, the agreement also includes obligations: Your case manager expects you to contact him regularly, especially when requested, that you are making sufficient efforts to find a new position and that you also provide evidence of this (you keep a “diary”!) And that you accept any reasonable work. This means that you also have to put up with unfavorable working conditions, a long distance to the workplace, a job that does not match your qualifications, or pay well below the standard. This also includes the so-called additional or one-euro jobs, referred to by law as work opportunities.

These must be in the public interest and must not displace regular bodies. The future will show whether appropriate controls can ultimately prevent abuse. Such jobs are intended especially for those who have little chance of a “right” position. You can read above how much of your earnings you can keep. In any case, you must accept the job if it is offered to you. Therefore, you should see the positive and see such jobs not as exploitation, but as an opportunity to earn something in addition to unemployment benefit II and do something useful in the process. A rejection will only be accepted if you have important reasons:

Don't forget: What do I have to do if I am unemployed?
