Every day we have to make many decisions, big and small, that will help us Set to achieve and work better. But sometimes these are simply avoided. Why? And can that be changed?
Decisions are made every day, even every hour. Some are bigger and keep us awake, some are so small and seemingly insignificant that we don't even notice them. Sometimes we are so overwhelmed that we have a decision delay it - in the hope that it will take care of itself - or avoid it altogether. And often we are not even aware of this mechanism.
Some time ago, Martin Weigert addressed the problem of why People usually prefer to make short-term, but potentially harmful, decisions rather than assess the long-term consequences and then act sensibly. The reasons for this lie in the lack of willpower and self-discipline - and in the Tampering through media and Marketing-Machinery.
So Weigert writes:
“The stronger willpower and self-discipline, the more likely we are to align our actions with long-term goals. The weaker they are trained, the more we allow our actions to be influenced by short-term interests and age-old instincts. Willpower requires a significant expenditure of energy, which is why every person sooner or later experiences moments of 'weakness' experienced."
Martin Weigert deals with his Article then, above all, how data mining still encourages this manipulation. On the other hand, I'm interested in another aspect of this topic: How do such decisions actually come about? How do decisions influence our path? And why do so many people - often unconsciously - do targeted decision avoidance?
Some time ago I over Fionnuala Meehan written that Sales-Director of Google Ireland, who impressed me with her statement that her work schedule is above all her own conscious choice. And now I'm experiencing the complete opposite in my environment:
There is a little "decision drama" going on. A long planned long trip could not be started or was started, but had to be interrupted after the first stage. The reasons for this can be explained at first glance with a series of unfortunate coincidences, technical defects and just a lot of bad luck. Some would call it fate.
If you take a closer look, however, behind almost every one of these small coincidences there is an avoided decision. Necessary precautions were not taken. Alternatives were not considered. In short: the decision to deal with possible difficulties on the trip in advance was avoided. If you investigate more closely why this or that was not implemented, you will hear excuses that sometimes seem a bit absurd.
And if you take a closer look, you can see the fears behind it. Perhaps the plan was a bit too ambitious Objective but a bit too unrealistic. And you just didn't have the whole plan under control. But of course you want to admit that last. So you prefer to push all sorts of other, sometimes self-made Problems .
Another important point: Most people ask themselves, “Will I successfully be?” when dealing with a decision, a next step, or an opportunity. But the much more important question is: “Is that it? Risks value?"
The difference: the question of whether the project is worth the risk requires the willingness to learn new things. The question of whether the success sets is a binary and often only leads to paralysis. Because predictions are difficult, especially if they affect the future.
The approach of many successful people is to take a risk, learn from it and try something new Background and experiences to the next Projects to go. Failure is an important element of this Strategy.
Better yet, when the failure actually occurred, then you are not annoyed about the spilled milk, but can also look forward to the learning effect. It is crucial that even before starting to get started it is accepted that a project might not succeed.
This is important because we only move out of our own comfort zone if we accept this risk: Maybe it will not work out. And yet it is OK, we can accept that, we have learned something.
If we do not accept the chance of a failure, we will remain seated on the proven, known and existing. We would not see many opportunities when we ask the question of success.
However, I don't want to say that you have to overcome all the adversities and difficulties that you encounter in life, even those Debt contributes, because one avoids continuous decisions. However, I believe that many of the problems that we are in Everyday life and Job have, are not infrequently the result of such avoided decisions.
Because beforehand, as Martin Weigert writes so nicely, we preferred to make short-term and impulsive decisions instead of long-term decisions. Then blaming the circumstances may seem comforting at first, but it doesn't get us anywhere in the long run. It is better to yourself clear to do where the mistake was and do it differently and better next time decide.
