What in Europe all Anxiety have, Iceland is already behind: the bank crash in 2008. The Crisis was a blessing for Gunnar Noroðdahl, because through her he won the Courageto try something new. And went from entrepreneur to farmer.
“I don't have any Vocational Training”, Gunnar says about himself. He went to school for 10 years. "To 10 different schools," he precesses, because his Mother worked on a new farm every year.
And at the University he studied economics for half a year. "I soon got bored of that, I wanted to do something of my own," he says.
Gunnar was never employed either: “When I was 19, I had my first Companys founded and always only worked for myself, ”he proudly reports. That was the fortnightly magazine “Whatch on”, which is still published in Rekjavik today - and which he sold in 14.
He worked in the publishing sector for a total of 20 years: "I published a television magazine, tourism magazines, books and advertising," said Gunnar, who is also related to the acting mayor of Rekjavik, Jón Gnarr. But in Iceland everyone is somehow related or known to everyone and everyone addresses each other by their first name.
Gunnar eventually had enough of it, always only in the Office to work. "I wanted to do something real," he says, and initially opened a furniture store.
That grew tenfold in three years, but Gunnar sold it shortly before the crisis. "I've always wanted to be a farmer," he says. He also owned horses when he was still living in Rekjavik.
When the crisis came, Gunnar decided to make a radical change in his lifestyle: “Other people lost her Money im Business, I thought it was better just to spend it,” he laughs. Back then he had a house and a big car in one of Rekjavik's better districts.
He had a summer house in the Hróarslæk area. One day he saw that the farm was for sale: The Family sold everything she had and invested in expanding the farm. He and friends spent a year renovating and expanding the building. Later came his Ms. and his children, his eldest son also moved with his wife and children to the farm, which is now a family business.
A trend that is present in Iceland: "People have been concentrating on the small things again since the crisis." Today Gunnar lives in a small house, drives a smaller car - and is happier.
The family now also includes 30 horses, 22 sheep, 8 chickens and a dog. Even though Gunnar grew up on farms and knew what was going to happen to him, he must admit today: "It was more work than I ever expected."
But Gunnar is not someone who can do the same for a long time: “I always have to find a new job. I want to run the farm for 10 years now - then we'll see. ”
The fact that he now lives in the middle of nowhere does not bother him: "That's the way it is in a country with only 300.000 inhabitants." Only the dark winters are tough: Gunnar is therefore happy to be away in January - for example in the USA. But he has also been to New Zealand several times.
Actually, lonely it is not here. From the start Gunnar had im Sinnto run a hotel here: “I would have been very surprised if that wasn’t the case Shop wouldn't go well," he says optimistic. The rapid success then surprised him: Last February, the Hótel Lækur opened with 13 rooms - and was booked up immediately.
“People want to see the Northern Lights. We were lucky that a big hotel nearby sent us the guests: we didn't even have anything online at the time”. Now that is Internet the most important Marketing-Strategy. “We have numerous positive Reviews at Tripp Advisor. That helps a lot,” says Gunnar, who also works with numerous tour operators, one of the most important of which is Icelandic farm hollydays Iceland.
