Twitter with its real-time communication and Google+ with its video conferences (hangouts) have shown where the journey in the Internet-Communication will go: Namely more and more for direct communication, also from different locations. A study has now examined how this will affect our work behavior.
Johnson Controls Global WorkPlace Solutions (GWS) asked 1.700 office workers what changes they expect to see in their work environment by 2020. Result: The respondents assume that the office work of the Future will take place much more in teams than is the case in today's work environments.
The research project “Collaboration 2020” was carried out by Dr. Marie Puybaraud, Head of Global WorkPlace Innovation at Johnson Controls Global WorkPlace Solutions, and Dr. Kjetil Kristensen, Strategy Consultant Collaboration at Kristensen Consulting.
The study examined how employees use certain technologies today or in which work environments they work and what changes they expect in the next few years. Objective the research was to get a better understanding of how collaborative work patterns affect business success Companys impact.
The authors interviewed office workers from the USA, Great Britain, Germany, Australia, India, Canada and China with at least five years of professional experience. 51,6 percent of the participants were Women, 48,4 percent men.
The respondents expect that the use of new information and communication technologies will mean that they will work more hours in the future Team instead of at your desk. Interactive digital screens, touch-sensitive surfaces and the ability to video confer with locations anywhere in the world Welt to be connected should promote collaborative work.
The expected increase in working hours in virtual teams means that employees spend less and less time in individual offices, on the phone, or in traditional meeting rooms.
Dr. Marie Puybaraud says:
“We know that Teamwork im Office an important driver for creativity, innovation and thus for business success. The team is more than the sum of its members. There are already various technologies for working together in teams.
However, the study shows that there is a large gap between the possibilities for targeted collaboration today and the needs that will emerge over the next decade. Companies that are not into collaborative technologies and new work environments invest, hamper productivity. This, in turn, has implications for anyone designing new work environments or redesigning existing ones.”
The typical office workplace is also likely to change. While only one-fifth of respondents currently use team workspaces with specific collaboration technologies, this is likely to be already 52 percent in nine years.
Conversely, it decreases Significance from traditional meeting rooms: 40 percent of respondents said they currently use such rooms regularly; only 2020 percent can imagine that for the year 27. Telephony behavior is also changing: 50 percent of those surveyed stated that they frequently use their desk phone; only a third expects this in 2020.
Marie Puybaraud:
“The study shows that work environments designed according to the unity principle are less effective than workplaces that are designed for specific purposes. There are no two organizations that are exactly the same. Therefore, every company must design the available office space in such a way that it best supports the respective business model and corporate culture.
The development towards increased collaboration in teams will therefore also change the way companies think about their real estate to plan. Spaces that specifically promote collaboration between employees will take up a larger proportion of an office's floor space. In the future, it will also be about a better understanding of the interaction of technologies, working methods and how People interact and what role the working environment plays in it”.
The use of video communications and other real-time communications technologies will also be encouraged clear gain weight. The surveyed office workers assume that in 2020 they will use the possibility of web conferencing, instant messaging and video conferencing significantly more often.
The proportion of those who regularly participate in web conferences will probably triple - from today 19 percent to 57 percent in 2020. The employees also expect that they will then also use technologies for cooperation that are still under development.
Nearly half of the respondents (44 percent) assume that 2020 will provide three-dimensional video conferencing with a better screen depth and a more realistic view.
