I recently reported on how the VDI reacts to complaints from its (paying) members regarding the subject of the shortage of skilled workers, which the association has always propagated. Namely anything but understanding. The members now want to defend themselves against this.
As has often been reported, the shortage of skilled workers is a subject of heated debate in Germany from time to time. And that's probably far too polemical. Because the whole picture has to be seen in a more differentiated way: there is Companywho actually lack skilled workers - and those who don't Problems have to fill positions.
The big companies obviously have fewer problems - this confirms the discussion I published here yesterday. The Jobstairs job exchange, for example, surveyed its members, 56 large German companies. The are with the previous number and quality of Candidate for 2012 largely satisfied.
More than two-thirds of those surveyed see none here change or even an improvement over the previous year. 67,6 percent of the companies surveyed are satisfied with the number of applications received.
The demand for technical professions is currently still a little tight. Trainees for metal and electrical professions, such as mechatronics or industrial mechanics, but also prospective railroad workers, are currently in particular demand.
64,7 percent of the companies surveyed are largely satisfied with the quality of the applicants, and 2,9 percent even exceeded their expectations. But: 32,4 percent criticize missing or insufficient qualifications among prospective career entrants, in particular there is a lack of good academic performance in the relevant subjects. Nonetheless, 36,4 percent of the survey participants have already made it clear in this early consultation phase that they will fill all of their advertised training positions for the year.
So we don't have a shortage of skilled workers and companies are complaining at a high level? Perhaps. But smaller companies, which often pay less or are less well-known, do struggle. So is there a shortage of skilled workers or are small business owners just too lazy to find the right people, eh? Dr. Brenke was upset?
In any case, it turns out that the subject has to be viewed in a very differentiated way. But that's exactly what the VDI doesn't do when it constantly polemicizes about the shortage of skilled workers. In response to inquiries from a reader and an engineer on 15.02.2012/XNUMX/XNUMX in SPIEGEL published interview with VDI-Executive Willi Fuchs or the mostly negative reader comments, the association reacted indignantly to outrageously:
“Now you're surprising me. First praise him SPIEGEL as the connoisseur of the situation, now the interview will be published and Mr. Dr. Fuchs 'toasted' because he reflects reality? With everything Respect, but slowly I can follow you just as seriously as I take Mr. Brenke. We look forward to the shitstorm you predicted, prepared with facts. The reactions to the interview on the web so far give us reason to do so. By the way: Whoever threatens has no good and tenable arguments. (is my private Opinions).”
My reader now wants to make his announcement come true and now persuade as many VDI members as possible to announce their departure - under the motto: "We are VDI". role model is the SALE
Meanwhile, there are rumors that the VDI's figures are not exactly correct, especially with the age structure of the engineers. You can be curious about how the story unfolds. Here is the, admittedly somewhat polemical appeal, to the action:
Hello everyone, then I want to start small. First we have to collect ourselves. I think I'll move on to you in a moment - I hope that's OK. And a promise in advance: I will of course your names and Email-Addresses without consent No way to blogs, media, etc. I start with a small call: If you have not yet terminated the VDI, I would ask, still until the latest possible time with the termination (The deadline is 3 months to the end of the calendar year). We need especially those VDI members, who have not yet terminated, for a small experiment: If in Germany only 100 engineers and specialists publicly announced a mass withdrawal from the VDI with a corresponding message announce, can that in Internet, press and television develop a considerable impact (*wake up call*) - especially against the background of the much-discussed alleged shortage of skilled workers. Because many VDI members who were indifferent and indifferent up to then are now looking for a public mass exit to be thoughtful, and then perhaps to the realization that unites us here: Namely that the VDI does not sufficiently represent the interests of its members, especially as far as its attitude to the alleged shortage of skilled workers is concerned. All you need is a trigger (nice word, we engineers and technicians love that sort of thing ;-)) to initiate this development and bring about a significant change in opinion among the members - in my opinion, the time is ripe for that. Then the VDI must show its colors. Our role model is the initiative "Wir-sind-einzelfall.de", which last year within a few months 14.000 (!!) unsatisfied customers was able to unite and thus suddenly "persuaded" the mobile operator O2 to make a course correction and massive network investments :-). Wherever it is possible, please forward it to *wir-sind-vdi@web.de*, link it, and on Facebook, Xing, Twitter…. split! At the moment we are still few, but I think that can change fast change if you discuss the topic with your colleagues and ask them if they don't want to take part. If 10 people each find 2 more interested parties, and these 20 then each 2 more, etc... you know the game... Anyone who has already left the VDI can still help extremely by referring VDI members in their circle of acquaintances to us I aufmerksam might. Well, it's doable, but only if you participate a little: It would be helpful, for example, to post in the largest comment areas (SPIEGEL, WORLD, THE TIME, Süddeutsche etc.) and spreading links from public reporting to friends and colleagues. You are welcome to my mail adress Wir-sind-VDI@web.de , so that further disillusioned VDI members can join here.

Hello Mrs. Janson,
thank you for this article and for following the “STEM skills shortage” discussion.
After I have not pursued the topic for a while because of weariness, my first impression is that the DIW study and the many read commentaries in online forums with some delay nevertheless work. Thanks to its continuity and the links, your blog is a part of this.
The VDI now has a problem because it has sold a labor market analysis based mainly on surveys with employers for years as an actual state. Now he is in the situation to hold on to bending and breaking this procedure, to represent differently determined numbers as wrong and to have to qualify critics.
I wish the 'Wir-sind-VDI' campaign every success.

Asking a doctor why he / she is a member of the Marburger Bund is the answer, which represents our interests and ensures that we are not fully exploited. Asking a pilot why he / she is a member of the cockpit is the answer that represents our interests and ensures that we are not interchanged by cheaper Indian or Chinese. And what are the reasons for a VDI membership for engineers?
"We are #VDI" Engineers are threatening to leave the association, which propagates the lie of skilled workers in the interests of employers
More please. Support is safe for you!

Your wish is my command - here you go:
That's what I call commitment. Finally someone says what the VDI is.
The VDI is the representation of interests of the new German industry needle.
So the low-wage lobbies of Mr. Hundt and the party dictators.
The defenseman deficit is high. There are ample engineers, but few inexperienced lowers.
With exit I can not serve, because I was never a member.

Thank you, we are pleased. Lately, the commitment of VDI has unfortunately declined somewhat. We have just started a four-part series on the subject of specialist martial skills, which will be continued next week:
