An interview with me in the form of 8 career tips appeared in the current issue of Petra magazine. On Article LEAD digital refers to it, but my statements, which I have been addressed several times, appear in a somewhat wrong light. An opinion.
Under the heading “Xing is mandatory, other networks freestyle” was published on December 12.12.2012, XNUMX on the LEAD website, which belongs to WundV Digital a contribution by Annette Mattgey, who took up my interview in Petra again. In it I am quoted as follows:
What you can do with your own profile in the Internet should be considered, explains Simone Janson, one of the most widely read job bloggers in Germany:…. “You don't have to work night shifts to maintain eight different profiles. Get down to the basics. A good self-portrayal on Xing is mandatory, for internationally oriented jobs also on LinkedIn. Other networks are optional.”
Well, that's what I said. However, in a certain context: The original statement "Xing is mandatory" was made in an interview for the magazine PETRA and referred to their target group - that is Women in permanent positions in more traditional ones Industries. (I hope I don't fall into the next blunder here).
My colleague Verena Hagedorn just wanted one klare statement which Network the best is and I said that you have to differentiate that according to the target group. For freelancers, the creative scene, etc., completely different requirements apply.
The Petra target group mentioned tends not to be tech-savvy and therefore simply has none Lustto deal with 5 social networks. Xing is the best way to bring this target group closer to being always on with Facebook, Twitter and her own blog are simply overwhelming.
But that doesn't mean that I consider Xing to be the ultimate wisdom in career planning. And anyone who knows my work knows that too. We have on Best of HR - Berufebilder.de® also published several times on this topic, like this interview, in which Regine Heidorn explains why she prefers Twitter over Xing.
2011 I have reported that Xing to the Companys counts, the 2015 will not exist anymore and why. And Svenja Hofert has also explained at the end of 2010, why she considers Xing almost dead.
In the meantime, Xing has introduced some crucial improvements and we both have ours Opinions revised. Guest author Martin Salwiczek, on the other hand, has always been of the opinion that Xing is the better tool for the Job Search at a hunt.
It can not be said that Xing is the better social network. Let's ignore my personal experiences: By the way, Twitter has also brought me much more than Xing.
Meanwhile, Johannes Lenz, who also auf Best of HR – Berufebilder.de® already as a guest author of his job search has reported a Quote-Interview about the article published digitally on LEAD:
In the article “Xing is not crucial for a new job” he explains how you can get a new job without Xing but with a lot of passion.

Hello Simone,
First of all, congratulations on this beautiful contribution - and at the same time it saddens me to see how often things are recently taken out of context by PR people. Unfortunately, it is not the first time that someone tries to distinguish themselves at the expense of others and I personally find that unbearable.
All the better that you cleared up the situation straight away. When you asked whether you need XING - I do because I like it. It doesn't eat a lot of bread, I got to know nice people through it and, especially in a business context, this way is often easier than calling anywhere - and mMn it is simply more serious than Twitter.
Regards
Hello Katharina,
Thanks for the great comments. It is just as I say in the article. everything depends on the person: For example, Xing 10 years ago did not bring anything at all at the job: Neither interesting contacts nor suitable information. In fact, I have often felt Xing as too business-like, the information I was given there was too unconcrete and a little detached. It took too much time to discuss this or that topic with people in different groups.
It was only Twitter that gave me the opportunity to get to know people more easily and to deepen these contacts in personal exchange. Twitter has also made a big impact on my career. Today, through this detour, Xing is also useful for me to maintain existing contacts. But you already look at our two example: It is different for everyone. It always depends on what you are looking for and whom you meet.
In this respect is simply completely silly to say, this or that network is better suited for job search.
I am not “women in permanent employment in more traditional industries”, I am tech-savvy and still consider many networks and profile maintenance on the Internet to be exaggerated (and narcissistic).
Sure, you can see that as narcissism. I personally see it rather pragmatic: it brings in revenue. However, I would not exaggerate it for time reasons.
Hi Philipp,
I am a woman and have no facebookbecause it costs me time and nerves. In fact, you have to find the right mix for yourself. From my current application phase, I can draw the (preliminary) conclusion that XING is important.
On the one hand, I found there because of the job exchange some exciting offers where it came to job interviews. On the other hand, I have a well-mixed network, which led me, for example, to one or the other place.
In this respect, I hardly think that it's pure narcissism - I've found my mix of Twitter, XIng, G + and Pinterest and everyone has to think about where they would like to play - without prejudice.
Regards
