"When I grow up, I'll be a footballer," I thought as a kid. Now that I'm grown up, I'm trying to share my enthusiasm for the social web and the opportunities it presents with others People to show.

Admittedly, it didn't look like that for a long time. During my degree in political science and administration, I had the Internet as much to do as the common Werder fan with that of Bayern Munich: Nothing.

The Study I started out in Halle/Saale and, after spending almost a year in Poland in the meantime, completed it in Leipzig in early 2007. A wonderful time in which I not only made many friends, but also learned and discussed a lot, whether about international politics or our neighboring country Poland, that much more awareness and interest on the part of German citizens than has been the case for years. But that's only marginally.

After graduation, the moment of truth came. In football they say: the next game is always the hardest. Is correct. So also in my case with the Job Search.

I actually wanted to get into political advice ...

I would have followed through with my intention of getting into scientific political consulting, for example via further research at the university including a dissertation. That was the first Choice. But when probing the terrain, talks with Professoren, lecturers and contacts gained via internships turned out to be out of the question.

I was amazed, I thought, with four internships - from message to think tank, from the EU to Poland - to have done the right practical preparatory work, including a diploma thesis and later double diploma with a grade of 1,7 each.

What to do? Clear case on a small budget: Back home, lick wounds and write applications. For what? Public relations work in the non-profit sector, focus on EU, Eastern Europe, etc. After all, I had gained experience in this area.

Armed with Wila, a magazine for Young Professionals and graduates of the Bonn Science Shop, sophisticated Internet research, countless registrations at job exchanges, etc. I was looking for my luck.

To abbreviate it: As a freshly bachelor graduate with me sobering at the beginning of the year 2007 wide. And the disappointment that no one gave me a chance was on me like a fresh gum on the floor, which connects itself too fast with the strolling shoe.

More than 150 applications later, a few job interviews in which it was attested that I was simply too close to the university, I began an internship at the BMW Group headquarters. The Alternatives would have been a 400 euro job in India. Admittedly, more appealing at first glance, but in the long term BMW made more sense to me, also in the hope that after a good job I might find a job there.

That was not the case. But I did a good job, got to know many people, gained valuable hands-on experience in issues management in a global corporation, and developed my enthusiasm for the social web.

The car-Crisis came, external Employees were dismissed and after an extension to eight months I ended my internship. It just didn't have me huge Fun made, but catapulted me a huge leap forward, both professionally and personally.

PR traineeship

And now? Ab, write applications. This time, however, I did not go back to the parental home, but to the brother on the balcony. The infrastructure with Internet, sporting activities and a new city soon became quite productive.

Just a month later, I was accepted by alma mater, a recruitment agency and career consultancy, for an eighteen-month traineeship in corporate communications and Online Marketing to start.

And another crisis, but this time it was fundamental because Economy like Finance were hit globally. However, it did not stop my urge to create and my growing enthusiasm for the social web.

Fight and develop your own ways

Battle, ways develop, Solutions find, all this brings with it the curiosity for new things and so I convinced mine Executivewho made me work almost independently and on my own responsibility to represent alma mater in public and especially on the internet. This involved the integration of the social web, in particular the development of social media (Twitter and Co.) for corporate communications.

The scope of duties was wide ranging, from the creation of newsletters to marketing messages, press releases, website maintenance, contact initiation and support, to trade fair and conference visits - everything was there.

New tasks in the Social Web are waiting

Now, a year and a half later, I decided to pursue my enthusiasm for the social web to bring in and develop the hands-on experience of social media.

In doing so, I learn a lot positive Resonance and happily go looking for a job again. Would someone ask me if it was the right one decision was to give up football, I would say: Yes, I would never be on the ball with the verve that I have on the social web.

My new job

I wrote that in my guest article “From Political Scientist to Social Web Enthusiast” in mid-April this year when I was full Optimism and Elan was looking for a job via the social web. And today, four months later, one or the other will now ask themselves...

Excellent! I'm sitting in the place of the ideas in Düsseldorf at a desk in the middle of a light-flooded office of the “Ideas Embassy” and think about the future social media guidelines of my company.

And that is called GRAY. GRAY is one of the advertising agencies in Germany for integrated Communication. I've been on board since July and haven't regretted a single day. Sure, you have to settle in, get to know the work processes and, last but not least, find your own role. But that is a challenge that I am happy to take on with power.

And the opportunities to advance the topic of the social web are great, as is the open culture, the zest for action or that Teamwork in the house. I will be able to prove myself creatively in my new position, which makes me very happy and at the same time an incentive. In doing so, I realize that I can “do”, i.e. concepts and Strategies develop and implement or write guest posts like this one.

This is primarily due to the fact that, together with my colleague Andre Paetzel, I oversee and advance the topic of the social web in the agency, which affects GRAY's internal and external dealings and appearance. Because my job title doesn't end in vain with ... Corporate Communication.

To summarize: I do what I want: I twitter, blogge, networks, try to share the spirit of the social web, attend conferences, think about, and enjoy a delicious Expresso together with colleagues and set up ideas around. And all this in the thematic triangle of PR, company communication and social web.

So and now one or the other may still be wondering whether that is a Story from a thousand and one nights is... No is not it. To anticipate the answer: At first I was allowed to have one Lecture on social media and Companys hold at GRAY.

On the same wavelength

The response to it was wonderful. There was also a first meeting with the management and other employees. After that, the intensified Contact to some employees via Twitter, Facebook and Co. so far that it becomes an invitation to a job interview came. I've also been asked once before to give one or the other assessment of projects related to the social web.

I think this has also shown that I have the appropriate skills to make a meaningful contribution to GRAY. Ultimately, this results in my attitude and immediate entry into the company.

The ideal theme

This would not have been possible without the Social Web, if it was not my issue, with which I had positioned myself before the job search professionally and on the other hand, since the contact took place over it.

For me, looking for a job via the social web means positioning yourself according to your skills and interests. That means creating selected social profiles that are updated regularly, seeking exchange and dialogue with other users and, in doing so, Humour not to verlieren, And clear, you also have to dare to do something, be open to approaching others and not only to take but also to give. After all, you should try to develop yourself further every day through your own curiosity.

For who does not dare not win!
