A few weeks ago I received an inquiry from the ARD program report of the Bavarian radio: When researching the subject of the shortage of skilled workers, the detailed discussion on the subject was based on Best of HR - Berufebilder.de® and was now looking for further information or interview partners on the subject. The show that came out of it has now been broadcast on ARD.
While the industry warns of the shortage of skilled workers with new panic reports, tens of thousands of well-trained and highly motivated German engineers are looking for a job. How does that fit together?
Pia Dangelmayer and Wolfgang Kerler compiled this article for report MÜNCHEN. For the article they also researched on Best of HR - Berufebilder.de® and collected all sorts of insights and figures that were no longer so new for me.
The article quotes a few good friends who have cropped up again and again over the course of several years of discussion. About Prof. Gerd Bosbach, Koblenz University of Applied Sciences, who in a panel discussion the statistical lies of our Society takes aim.
Marco Dadomo, press spokesman of the Association of German Engineers eV, who is not only on Best of HR – Berufebilder.de®, but also continued to insist on the story of the shortage of skilled workers in the report broadcast. And finally Tanja Mett-Bialas, an engineer for communications technology printing, who cannot find a job. Because for years the Association of German Engineers has been warning of the shortage of skilled workers, but now it suddenly doesn't exist. Apparently the reaction to media reports.
Already 2010 predicted the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry that until 2015 almost 50 percent of Companys would expect a shortage of skilled workers. Likewise, 2012 also announced studies by Forsa or Kienbaum.
And according to the Association of German Engineers in Germany even 80.000 engineers are missing. This figure has been calculated by the VDI by multiplying the number of posts notified to the Federal Agency for Employment by seven. Reason: According to a survey of 2009, only every seventh place of the employment agency is also reported.
The absurdity of such numbers has been pointed out again and again - by various experts who appeared in the said ARD program, by book author Martin Gaedt and also by us again and again Best of HR – Berufebilder.de® and in media like Welt or business week. Yes, there was even one large-scale action, which called for the general withdrawal from the VDI.
The VDI was extremely unimpressed, almost arrogant. Stoisch was repeatedly explained that one must expect in any case with a skilled labor force deficit.
And now this: The VDI is rowing back – but of course it won't admit it. Suddenly even an engineer surplus instead of shortage is the one Rede. So in a contribution of FAZ Michael Schwartz, Head of Division Strategy and Communication at the VDI, quoted with the following statements:
On the one hand, the dropout rate in engineering courses has fallen from 45 percent to 35 percent within two years. On the other hand, the advertising was about Women worth it. In technical jobs, they are still outnumbered by their male colleagues. But their share is slowly increasing. And in the medium term it is noticeable that a year ago two Abitur classes finished school and one Study have recorded. Therefore, in five years' time, a large group of young engineers will be entering the job market.
So the constant media reports on the topic have not passed so completely without a trace at the VDI. It seems so. But of course they would not admit it.
So let's summarize: No huge shortage of skilled workers among engineers that is affecting Germany as a business location. Not even a gap. Instead, there is suddenly a shortage of skilled workers IT.

A second problem in engineering deficiencies:
Just today, the Federal Agency for Labor publishes a report in which the shortcomings are listed:
• Engineers metal construction and welding technology (highly qualified experts2)
• Engineers of machinery and vehicle engineering (highly qualified experts)
• Engineers Mechatronics, Energy and Electrical Professions (highly qualified experts)
• engineers technical research and development (highly qualified experts)
• Engineers technical drawing, construction and modeling (highly qualified experts)
• Engineers supply and disposal (highly qualified experts)
• Highly qualified experts in the field of computer science
• Highly qualified experts in IT application consulting
• Highly qualified software development and programming experts
as well as health and nursing care.
Problem: At present VDI, BDI and the like are working. Advertised undifferentiated for MINT professions. But that many engineering degrees, especially Bachelor do not belong to the shortage occupations unfortunately goes into the discussion.
For the rest, the engineers will be the first academics to be in trouble at the next economic downturn.
Conclusion: Perhaps rather prefer to study according to inclination and not according to labor market forecast!
Hello Mr. Hahn, thank you for the reference and the overview. I will post the same again separately.
They get to the point: you have to look at the whole topic in a more nuanced way than many do. Immediately afterwards, I interview a plant manager who is desperately looking for skilled chemical workers - also skilled workers!
By the way, when it comes to studying based on inclination, I am a little skeptical from my own experience: It is certainly nonsense to torment yourself through a math course that is not suitable for you (but does, for example, some trainee teachers to improve your own chances) - on the other hand, you can maybe you also align the inclinations a little in line with the market. For example, I recently met a linguistically interested high school graduate who is now doing a stay in Asia and then wanting to start a dual business administration degree with a foreign language focus.
Many of them simply lack the ideas and the possibilities to get information about what else is out there and then you just study something that you think fits. And tendencies also change over time ...
