The topic of flexible working is currently difficult. I have been advocating the topic for years, not least, the constant pressure on the presenter of my former employer was the reason for me to remain self-sufficient and remain mistreated against job offers. Of course I am glad that this is now such a trend. On the other hand: I remain suspicious.
I have no idea why the topic is suddenly so hyped: Whether it's because of Success from books like “I’ll be in later tomorrow?” lies? Or because companies are slowly realizing that the constant need for control deters good people?
But if now already the personnel team of the German Telekom on ZEIT ONLINE calls for “an end to the presence culture” - then there has to be something involved - right?
According to an international survey of 17.000 workers in 80 countries commissioned by Business-Center provider Regus was performed, offer 76 percent of the Companies in Germany offer their employees the opportunity to choose their place and time flexibly.
Because the majority of firms are said to be convinced that flexible work arrangements Employees become more productive and motivated and has a positive effect on the work-life balance privacy affects. In addition, 58 percent of companies in Germany consider this way of working to be more cost-effective than working at a fixed location.
I beg your pardon? I thought I was not right: if this survey were correct, then most of the employees in Germany would have to do their job at home or at the cafe. There was no longer any shuttle service and hardly any office space. There can be something wrong.
In fact, if you keep reading, you ask fast found that with these answers, the desire is the father of the thought - the desire to present yourself as a hip and employee-friendly employer brand. A law firm had recently attempted this without success.
Indeed, just under six out of ten of the surveyed companies offering flexible work stated that their employees could better reconcile work and private life and be more satisfied and motivated.
60 percent are that Opinions, flexible working increases productivity, a fifth of companies see it as an opportunity to be an attractive employer for highly qualified specialists. A third of those surveyed, on the other hand, simply want it Money Saving appreciates the possibility of being able to employ employees at locations outside of their company buildings.
Why then, flexible work in Germany is not yet the prevailing working model, the survey also shows immediately: The confidence that even ordinary employees do their job outside the office is obviously limited. Thus 12 percent of the German companies allow the privilege to work flexibly only to their executives.
Too bad. There is a lot of persuasion to do. Germany is just beginning to make working hours more flexible. And not, as 76 percent of respondents want to believe, right in the middle. But the discussion on the subject is urgently overdue.

Thank you for this detailed article.
I myself work in a medium-sized company and am directly confronted with the problem. For more than 6 years now, we have enabled our employees to work from home and to organize their time freely. But this has nothing to do with a total abolition of attendance - many of us still like coming to the office. The gain is simply the freedom that I can decide for myself when and where I want to work. And unfortunately, as the article states, sometimes this idea is just a fantasy.
The fact is: it doesn't work without trust, an overview and organization. We have developed our own software to keep track of working hours and projects and to stay in contact with each other. In this way, we remain a team in which everyone can be sure that their work is valued - even if it is not taking place in the office.
Hello Mrs. Handl,
I am glad that this seems to be working in more and more companies. An interesting approach!
Hello Xtc: Exactly this experience I also made. So ask me really how the survey can come to such numbers. Or has not the middle class been questioned?

... but especially in medium-sized businesses it is unfortunately still the case that “overtime is paid for with the salary” and it does not go down well if someone dares to leave the office before 6 am.
