Hand straight to the point: a successful interview doesn't always work out after a top sporting performance. But can we blame “our” athletes at the moment of greatest success or bitter defeat?
Fascinating Olympic Games! It's the environment. The history. The broad mix of disciplines. The atmosphere and much more make Olympia unique.
Everyone takes a look inside and even adapts their own day, night and sleep rhythm to the start times of their favorite sport during the Olympics.
By the time the awards ceremony is over, even the most serene citizen of the world will have a patriotic gene when he sees a local athlete on the podium on TV. The medals shine and the whole Welt seems to be listening to the national anthem.
The feeling "we are just who" controls the level of satisfaction with yourself and the world for a certain moment.
Sporting, I do not want to analyze the Olympic Games, I leave that to the fans and the proven experts in the field.
Likewise the social and economic effects as well as the political meaningfulness, which currently describes a more peaceful coexistence of North and South Korea ...
Let's look at the games from the perspective of the Communication, then one more exciting aspect becomes recognizable in its concentrated form:
When athletes take part in the interview, there is always hope that the gap between top athletic performance and “hopefully this interview will soon be over” is not too great for everyone involved. But it's not just the athletes' fault.
From a language perspective, it is noticeable that certain reporters would benefit from a self-reflection in creative questions. Of course it also requires on reporter side of the necessary skill to accommodate as many questions in the short flight time.
The Ask like “How did you experience the race?”, “Why didn't you win?” or "Are you glad that so many fans are in attendance?" however, it is extremely difficult for the respondent to respond with real depth.
When asked in the finish area “Why didn't you win”, a skier recently said, “If I knew that, I would have done it differently from the start”.
Or on the opener “Are you glad that so many fans are present?” it’s impossible to answer with anything other than “yes” - trick question and very superficial ...
Indeed, certain communicative characteristics can be observed: Whoever wins, looks for himself! It is the “own” reasons, the so-called “internal attributions”, that stand in the foreground.
When asked “Why did you win?” Usually answers like “We had an optimal preparation phase”, “I was able to Performance retrieve to the point” or “everything was successful right from the start”.
The reverse is the case when you lose: “External Attributions” (or more commonly: “Reasons to be found outside”) are heard very often:
“Luck was not on our side of mine”, “The weather conditions were marginal” or “Everything worked out for the opponent today, you can hardly beat him in top form”. We seldom hear these two characteristics in reverse.
Athletes are simply more exposed. Maybe that's why they are like us sympathisch. And let's take a look at our own everyday communication fast clear: Is it about mistakes or successes in (work)Everyday life, we often handle it the same way.
Only with us does not always carry a TV camera our chats in the whole world. In that sense, let the Olympic spirit inspire our communication!

To use the spirit of Olympia in communication? A ridiculous topic does not come to mind, right?
