Girls' Day is taking place in Germany for the ninth time today. For girls and Boy This day offers women the opportunity to gain an insight into technical and information technology, manual and scientific professional fields - precisely those areas in which there is already a need for young professionals and in which women have so far been underrepresented. After all, half of all female trainees still opt for a typical female profession, while only around 20 percent of engineering students do female are.
The Business and Professional Women (BPW) Germany see the Girls' Day is an important day of action to overcome gender-specific wage inequality in Germany. Because for the BWP, the traditional career choice behavior, according to which women push into the poorly paid women's jobs, is one of the reasons for the gender-specific wage gap in Germany.
A start should therefore be made at an early stage to recruit girls for jobs in better-paid, male-dominated areas Industries to show them the different career and earning opportunities in the individual professions and sectors, but slowly for sure break with traditional career choices. Because, like that on account of the BWP, if women work in typical male occupations, to earn her more too.
I disagree and find this approach, which the Federal Employment Agency likes to propagate, too brief: research shows another phenomenon:
“Whenever women enter a male profession, men withdraw from it. Conversely, the advancement of men into a female profession is usually associated with the fact that men take on managerial positions. It has been proven several times that the gender-specific composition of a profession determines its social status. A high proportion of women then correlates with a low social status. This applies largely regardless of the work content of a profession. ”
This coincides with my observations, which I made eg in my own profession, the journalism: Formerly a typical male profession, he is today dominated more feminine and the earning opportunities sometimes blatantly bad.
At the same time, however, I notice that the men often earn more and usually hold the leadership positions.
All in all, this would mean that the calculation “girls, just do men's jobs” cannot work because it is simply too short. ME is much less dependent on the job itself than much more on the attitude of women to their job, how much they earn:
Women simply often have different priorities than men and simply ask less for their services Money, often out of personal insecurity. The lever for women to earn more money should start with the women themselves and not with them Career choice.
