In addition to the training, the employment agency then offers the “real” further training measures, which the SGB calls “promotion of vocational training” Further Training”. Although it has long since officially ceased to exist, it is still used internally by the employment agency.

How is the promotion of continuing vocational training regulated by law?

Although the division into retraining, further education and vocational adjustment already 1997 was officially repealed with the transition to the third Social Code, it exists in many places in the internal linguistic usage of the Federal Employment Agency even further - the employment consultants of that time have not yet become accustomed to the new terminology everywhere.

You will also often find the designations in official brochures from the employment agency. And finally, the division is useful to promote the Further Training by the Employment Agency to clarify the various funding options that fall under the funding of vocational training.

• In a retraining you learn a new profession, so it is a kind of second education. Retraining is encouraged if you are no longer able to work in your chosen profession (eg for health reasons or because there is no job at your place of residence, but you can not move away for family reasons) and if you clearly after retraining have more chances to find a job. If you are a roofer and the doctor certifies that you can not work because of back problems, you have a good chance. These will be improved if you have previous knowledge on which retraining can build on - then retraining will be shorter and cheaper. • Further training makes sense for you if you can no longer find a job with your previous training and therefore have to or want to continue your education on the basis of your current skills (in contrast to retraining, which represents a complete reorientation). This includes the businessman who wants to do his business administration as well as the journeyman who wants to take his master's examination. But unskilled workers without a professional qualification who want to catch up can also apply for further training.
• If, on the other hand, you have not worked for several years, for example because you have looked after the family, you will be referred to as a professional returnee and can be given a job adjustment that is designed to bring your skills and knowledge up to date with everyday working life - after all changes a lot! The accountant, for example, who has spent 15 years dedicated to bringing up children, now has to learn how to use the latest software before she can continue to use her specialist knowledge. Even if one speaks separately of job adaptation at the employment agency, there is no longer any special support for target groups such as women returning to work. These are taken into account in the context of the “labor market need”, ie if, like everyone, you have a specific opportunity to get back in and need further training.

Duration

The duration of such courses varies greatly, ranging from one week to two years. It depends on what is to be conveyed. Since each participant has different previous knowledge, on which the further training should build, many educational institutions no longer work with a complete course, but with “modules” that you can get in and out of, depending on your previous knowledge. You can therefore choose exactly those parts of the further training with which you can close your gaps. As a result, the Measures also cheaper.

You can receive further education grants if you are entitled or in receipt of unemployment benefits, ie have worked for at least 12 months in the last two years or if you receive unemployment benefit II.
