Dusseldorf belongs for sure one of the most underestimated cities in Germany. as pure Business-City notorious, still awaits you with some rustic charm. How is this reflected in the meeting locations?

Fair and congress city Dusseldorf

All clear, the hotels of the trade fair city focus heavily on business clientele. In the CCD Congress Center Düsseldorf alone, 29 major events with more than 1.000 participants took place last year.

Düsseldorf is a classic business and trade fair city with professionally equipped conference locations. This has great advantages in terms of equipment and service, but with charm and originality must be made in part.

Meeting locations in quick overview

In Dusseldorf, for example, the Maritim Hotel at the airport has to be mentioned. It is the largest conference hotel in North Rhine-Westphalia with 31 conference rooms and boardrooms with capacities for up to 6000 people. Therefore, major events take place here regularly. Or the two Lindner hotels: One, with eight conference rooms, is 2,5 KM from the airport, the other is on the left bank of the Rhine and offers space for up to 18 people with 450 conference rooms.

Both hotels probably appeal to a somewhat dignified clientele, I think they are a bit old-fashioned and the immediate area is not appealing. The latter also applies to the Renaissance Duesseldorf Hotel of Marriott on the northern feeder road. After all, it has just been completely renovated, with its 11 meeting rooms for up to 520 people looks stylish and cozy at the same time. Downside is however beside the situation also the not free WLAN.

All points of criticism, which one searches in vain in the Breidenbacher Hof, the best hotel in Dusseldorf - for which the price is exorbitantly high. After all, you can also meet celebrities like Pink or Harald Glöckner here, but the luxurious hotel directly on the Kö has only three conference rooms for up to 65 people. I found the bistro food a little disappointing, but the hotel specifically points out that it would rather serve "home cooking" than gourmet cuisine.

The large hall with 2534 square meters will be glad of large Companys or medical congresses, it costs 13.000 Euro / day. The Welthungehilfe Brunch, the Jelicon, the European Darts Open or the German Sustainability Award are also held here. The room is carpeted, but can be equipped with parcel on request. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel for free.

At trade fairs, there is a free trade fair shuttle to the trade fair 4,5 km away. Overall, the hotel impresses with its high level of professionalism in service and has event capacities for up to 6.000 people and 4 restaurants with 542 seats. Here there is Rhenish cuisine or sushi and a rich breakfast buffet.

In the lobby there is a board with the departures, there are 450 pitches, the connection to the public passenger transport is modest: Either one travels over the whole airport to the station, or one goes by the suburban line 11 , which also runs only during the week during the week only all 20 minutes.

2. Lindner Hotels - solid quality

Not far from the fair and the airport lie the two Lindner Hotels, the Lindner Congress Hotel and Lindner Hotel Airport, which is actually well located but 2,5 KM - on request, a shuttle service is offered.

The Lindner Congress Hotel is the trunkthe hotel chain is located on the other side of the Rhine on the Seestern. Also these two hotels address, as far as location and facilities are concerned, rather a business clientele and serve a rather ground-like taste.

Lindner Hotel Airport

The Lindner Hotel Airport has 201 rooms in three categories and 38 boardinghouse studios for long-term stays. There are eight conference and meeting rooms for up to 180 persons, which can be combined in part.

All rooms are equipped with communication technology, the house has its own conference technician. Wi-Fi is available but not for free at Lindner. The hotel also has a fit-and-wellness area with sauna, solarium and steam room. Breakfast is served in the restaurant and is good.

The mother house on the other side of the Rhine is also geographically not far from the fair and airport, to the latter there is also a direct bus. The hotel has 270 rooms and two suites. The prices start from 70 Euro per night on the weekends and 121 Euro during the week.

There are 18 conference, banquet and group work rooms for 10 - 450 people available, and the building is also very business-oriented in terms of architecture and furnishings. Especially in the months of October and November, which are heavy for meetings, it is advisable to book meeting rooms a year in advance, even for smaller rooms. Again, the breakfast is of a good standard.

3. Innside by Melia - Design at the Medienhafen

The Innside Hotel at Düsseldorf's Medienhafen is already inspired by its modern architecture: the 2001 designed by the British star architect William Allen Alsop, 17-storey and 62-meter-high house, a façade consisting of 2.000 colored glass panels.

12 floors of the office building were converted into a hotel with 134 rooms that opened 2013. The decor is very modern. From these and the Sky Lounge and Bar, which is also open to visitors, you have, especially in 16. Floor. a fantastic view over the media harbor, the old town and of course the Rhine.

For Meetings Two meeting rooms are available with a capacity of up to 40 people or 70 when combined. There are also two suites for smaller meetings of up to 4 people. WLAN, beamer and 80 inch flat screens are available for events. In the Skylounge on the 16th floor there is a very nice breakfast buffet, in the evening it becomes a restaurant and bar, where DJ events or live cooking events sometimes take place. There is also a fitness room and a Finnish sauna with a relaxation area. You can also rent Seagways here and drive to the old town and back along the Rhine promenade.

The location of the hotel at the Media Harbor is actually ideal, but there is comparatively little going on here during the week, what a light cool atmosphere. The traffic binding by only one tram could be better.

4. Renaissance Duesseldorf Hotel by Marriott - a discovery

A discovery is Marriott's Renaissance Duesseldorf hotel, which has just undergone a complete renovation and creates a rare balancing act between modern design and cosiness. It has 134 rooms and 10 meeting rooms for 40 to 130 people and a three-part ballroom for up to 520 people. There is also a restaurant and bar, as well as a spa area.

For comparatively moderate prices (conference flat rate of 64,00 euros for 8 hours included Technology, drinks, lunch and 2 coffee breaks) the hotel offers professionalism and comfort in equal measure. A very good idea is the meeting service app, which allows guests from the conference room to communicate directly with the service staff if they need anything. A downside of the hotel, however, is the non-free Wi-Fi and its location outside the city center, but it is close to the airport and exhibition center. However, there is no shuttle service.

5. The Breidenbacher Hof

Breidenbacher farm-Duesseldorf008

The Breidenbacher Hof is the most luxurious – and correspondingly most expensive address – for business guests in Düsseldorf, and that's what it's like centrally right on the Kö. Here you can have dinner next to Harald Glööckler or meet the singer Pink - and hold smaller conferences.

A little chunky he already looks from the outside, this is quite a house with history: 1812 built by Adolph von Vagedes on behalf of the restaurant owner Wilhelm Breidenbach, the hotel is starting from the middle of the 19. It was only among the restaurateurs Capellen-Heydendahl and from 1908 as palace hotel Breidenbacher Hof to the best address of the city. Among the famous guests are: Clara and Robert Schumann, Czar Alexander II, the Duke of Prussia, the Princes Adalbert, August and Frederick of Prussia and Duke Maximilian of Bavaria.

Used in the First World War as a military quarter, completely destroyed in World War II, the Hotel 1950 is managed by the operating company Breidenbacher Hof GmbH under the leadership of Dr. Georg Linsenmeyer rebuilt. King Juan Carlos of Spain or Maharani of Baroda as well as the most important business leaders of the Federal Republic stayed here.

In the seventies, the hotel was renovated and 1979 opened an internationally renowned nightclub in which there are also many filmmakers; Stars like Peter Ustinov, Curd Jürgens and Hans Albers go in and out. 2004 the hotel has to be demolished because of structural defects.

The new owners, the Pearl of Kuwait Group, want to build on the old days of the traditional hotel and decide to rebuild the hotel with the help of Eurohypo AG and project developer Chandler KBS Breidenbacher Hof. The operator is the “West Paces Hotel Group”, which has run the Breidenbacher Hof under the luxury brand Capella since 2008. The Breidenbacher Hof has the “Hotel of the Year 2015” award, which is given annually by the Schlummer Atlas editorial team.

On nine floors, next to the five-star hotel of the luxury hotel collection Capella Hotels and Resorts, you will find 85 guest rooms and 21 suites of various categories, including a Royal Floor with eleven units on the ninth floor, which can also be rented exclusively.

You can not complain about the facilities and the comfort: The rooms are equipped with all the technical refinements - only the lighting that can be operated via the touch screen annoys me a bit - luxurious, but nevertheless cozy. Of course, this costs from 230 Euro per night per room.

Breidenbacher farm-Duesseldorf007

In addition to the hotel, there are private residences, offices on 18m² as well as a shop line with several well-known boutiques such as Escada, Calvin Klein, Marco Polo, Petit Bateau, Perfume Schnitzler by Douglas and Hugo Boss. In the basement is a (somewhat cold) pool, a fitness and small saunas.

As is the case with a hotel of this category, the Breidenbacher Hof is waiting for you with excellent service and very friendly staff, who will be able to note their special training: the service included in the room rate includes:

Breidenbacher farm-Duesseldorf009

Free arrival and departure times, WiFi access throughout the hotel, non-alcoholic drinks in the refreshment center in the guest rooms, use of the Capella Living Room with free drinks, fruit and pastries, and "personal assistants" as personal contacts before, during and after your stay. These personal assistants sometimes go shopping on the Kö with their regular guests, look after the children or to plan in advance of the entire stay.

The Breidenbacher Hof also offers some amazing services: For example, the private clinic “Pearl of Aesthetics” for aesthetic and plastic surgery as well as the Preventicum for cardiovascular and preventive medicine.

Breidenbacher farm-Duesseldorf005

In the Capella Bar, the singer Pink has immortalized herself with a graffiti. However, it is not only open to guests, but also to Düsseldorfers who come here to the Afther Work Lounge for 9 or 19 euros to enjoy either currywurst or oysters.

Because the Breidenbacher Hof is luxurious, but by no means wants to be elite. The entrance area and restaurant are therefore also open to “normal” visitors and the prices in the brasserie “1806”, where Harald Glööckler had dinner during my visit, are moderate.

However, guests who want to withdraw can do so in the Living Room, where snacks are available, or in the “Private Dining Room” with space for up to 14 people.

Breidenbacher farm-Duesseldorf015
Breidenbacher farm-Duesseldorf003

The restaurant itself has 65 seats and bodententfen, from the outside uneinsichtigen windows can be seen the hustle and bustle on the street. However, if you expect a luxury menu, you will be disappointed:

The Team around head chef Philipp Ferber and Sous Executive Holger Rohkohl serves classics of French brasserie cuisine with strong Rhenish accents - such as roasts, steaks, but also seafood. The breakfast, however, lives up to all expectations.

Breidenbacher farm-Duesseldorf014
Breidenbacher farm-Duesseldorf013

This brings us to the biggest shortcoming of the otherwise generally recommendable hotel: Due to its limited space, it is only partially suitable for conferences and meetings, but it is technically perfectly equipped, including an internet connection directly integrated into the table. The Kö-Salon offers such a permanently installed table for board meetings or business meetings of up to 16 people.

Breidenbacher farm-Duesseldorf010

The Theodor-Körner-Salon is suitable for small private or business events. It can accommodate up to approx. 35 people in the theater style. The Heinrich Heine Salon is the largest of the three event rooms. In the theater style, around 65 people can be seated in this room. The prices are individually negotiable.

Conclusion: Düsseldorf - the perfect meeting location?

Is Düsseldorf the perfect business meeting location? The decision probably depends on personal taste and location. But I like Düsseldorf, which clearly convinced me with the professional equipment and the better accessibility from many locations. You won't find any particularly original locations here.

A note at the end: Since the WLAN in the Düsseldorf hotels was not so optimal and my cell phone battery can also fail, I used the Falk City Map Extra with standard folding of Düsseldorf and the surrounding area for my research. Another advantage of a paper plan: The plan offers a better overview of the city than any smartphone that could. is very easy to use thanks to its leporello folding. The street directory, the postcodes and the street map, 1: 150.000 on the back of the city map are also helpful. What I missed was a network map of the local public transport. After all: Düsseldorf, located between the Ruhrpott and Rhineland, is optimally connected to the ICE route and has the most important airport in North Rhine-Westphalia and the third largest airport in Germany.
