Yesterday I received an invitation to submit a paper to the 9th workshop on labor market policy, which is being organized by the Halle Institute for Economic Research together with the Institute for Labor Market and Vocational Research. Under the motto "Lack of skilled workers - what is it?" the two institutions want to discuss the topic in October.
The topic sounds exciting in itself and is also important: For two days on 18./19. October 2012 Experts discuss the subject of skills shortages. The keynote speaker is Holger Bonin, head of the research area “Labor Markets, Personnel Management and Social Security” at the Center for European Economic Research since October 2007.
But if you take a closer look at the announcement, it is assumed once again that we have a shortage of skilled workers - and how we should deal with this. Accordingly, it is again about topics such as demographic trends and employer branding.
Anyway, I was asked to forward the call to anyone interested in what I am doing here: contributions can go as far as the 27. Juli 2012 in German or English language as PDF or Word file to the following eMailAddress to be submitted: Birgit.Schultz@iwh-halle.de
This should either be a full article or a longer summary (two pages). The decision A contribution will be accepted by September 14, 2012.
And here again the abstract, that eg also at the IAB finds:
Due to demographic developments, a decline in the potential labor force is to be expected in Germany over the next few years. In connection with the recently improved employment situation, the near future could Future establish a trend towards a labor market. In such a situation, companies would step up order Employees with asked qualifications and Competencies compete and wages rise in tight labor market segments.
If effective adjustment mechanisms such as changed training decisions, occupational mobility and wage increases do not take effect, the German Economy the labor factor will become scarce. The fear of long-term bottlenecks is fueled by the fact that there are already complaints about considerable recruitment problems in certain regions and fields of activity.
In the context of this call, there are also exactly two central ones Ask:
These questions have been the focus of economic and labor market policy discussions for some time. The workshop takes up the problem and deals with the causes and consequences of a possible shortage of skilled workers on a micro- and macroeconomic level.
For this purpose, different subject areas with different focal points are to be discussed:

Institute for Economic Research wants to investigate with IAB specialist deficit: Call for Papers - what is the turn?
Another interesting aspect:
If there was a shortage of skilled workers, then the companies would not do anything to keep your people in a good mood and bind their own specialists?
How does it fit into the Gallup 2011 study, according to which almost 85% of the employees are so dissatisfied that they either only make service according to regulations or have already terminated internally?
