If you want to work on the go, you need the perfect equipment. Starting with the mobile device itself, through the right bag and the right charging cable. However, the mobile work equipment market is always on the move, and constant adjustments are necessary.

1. The tools of the future are small and handy

If you now ask, what about the upholstery for mobile work equipment in a complex emergency?ebook-Backpacks or even suitcases on wheels, I ask him back: Do we need them in Future because at all? As expected, the smaller and lighter tablets with their completely new operating concept consisting of a touchscreen, on-screen keyboard and apps have not managed to turn our traditional working habits upside down: the expected one Revolution has failed to materialize. Which tools and matching bags will we then use in the future?

Some time ago I had the opportunity to test an ultrabook and a tablet in quick succession. Both were equipped with Windows as the operating system, which makes comparability easier, but in my opinion it does not do both devices well: Because, especially on tablets, the supposedly big hit from Microsoft is in reality an unhappy hermaphrodite between the two worlds, neither fish nor meat . Sure, the start menu looks stylish and made for touchscreens; however, if you want to use “normal” programs, you cannot do without a mouse or stylus. This bad mix makes the use of devices, both tablets and ultrabooks, a pain - and my comparison actually unfair.

Because when it comes to user-friendliness, the ultrabook clearly won for me: With it, the operating system can be used as usual via mouse and keyboard, and the device reacts as usual fast Even more complex work such as video editing is therefore almost as easy as possible on a home desktop PC. In addition, the 12-inch screen is a comfortable size for working. Only weight and battery life cut here clear worse off. Working on the tablet, on the other hand, was just fumbling around for me: Without a stylus, it's impossible to use the small buttons. However, I have to admit that I didn't install any apps due to lack of time, but used the usual programs such as Open Office. Incidentally, Android tablets work much better here.

2. The stylus - a model with a future?

Switching back and forth between netbook and tablet mode, as I imagined beforehand, hardly ever happens in reality, since I usually have to type something that can be done with ten fingers.System on the external keyboard is simply easier. The tablet therefore remains in its holder almost the whole time and in this way becomes a kind of netbook with a screen that is too small for more complex work and too little RAM - the classic netbookProblem, to which there are other disadvantages: the fragile construction in the stand, the cumbersome handling of the stylus instead of the mouse - and the two chargers that you now have to carry with you for the tablet and keyboard. In this case, there is also the lack of connectivity, e.g. an SD card slot is missing; the connection via USB, for example with an external hard drive, is also difficult.

However, the stylus was a revelation for me. Font recognition works amazingly well, even with my handwriting and even with prescribers. This shows the strength of the tablet system: you can actually enter notes directly and convert them into printed text. In addition, this type of entry is also possible in confined spaces, for example on an airplane.

However, it would be even more practical if you could enter the text directly into the text file instead of in a separate input window. For me it also takes some getting used to, texts with the Hand to write - I type much faster. Improvements in the text are also rather difficult to implement with the stylus. However, more and more often I find myself writing texts and eMails now read with a tablet – but without one Solution for when I need to answer quickly.

3. Solve seemingly unsolvable problems - or what to do if the laptop does not fit the projector

Sometimes you want to transfer the data from the small mobile screen to a large HDTV - eg presentations, videos, pictures. What options are there?

Anyone who often gives lectures or is on a business trip knows the following problem scenarios: You want your Presentation show, but the connections of the laptop do not match the possibly outdated projector. However, a large flat screen is often available. You only have the presentation on your cell phone or tablet and there is no laptop on site. This is regularly my problem because I no longer own a laptop.

On business trips you want to view the content of your internet-enabled cell phone, such as pictures or streamed videos, on the large screen in your hotel room instead of on the small screen. There is a simple and practicable solution to all of these problems: a so-called screenshare or screencast adapter. He transmits resp. spiegelt the complete screen image of a smartphone or tablet wirelessly on an HDTV screen or on a simple PC monitor. Precondition for this: The TV set has an HDMI input.

This device can be used, for example, to stream films or watch TV on the PC monitor using a mobile phone. For me personally, this has the advantage that I only need one screen and can still skip the computer to relax in the evening with a nice movie. The screensharer also transmits the sound without any problems. However, the monitor should either have speakers or an audio output to connect external speakers. Because you can't just stream the sound from the mobile phone to the loudspeakers because the sound on the mobile phone itself is switched off.

There are different manufacturers for such offers. HAMA kindly provided me with a screenshare adapter free of charge for a product test, which conveniently also supports all common transmission formats (Miracast, Allshare, Media LinkHD, AirSharing, SmartShare, Play to, and many more). This is a Hama wireless screenshare adapter, smartphone to TV (HDMI ™). The handy helper measures only 3 x 7 x 1 cm and weighs 50 g, so it fits ideally in any trouser pocket. Also included is a small antenna (0,5 m connection cable) that can be connected as an option. The device can be used with all Android devices from Android 4.2.1 or higher as well as Kindle Fire HDX / 8.9 and fits multimedia devices (smartphone, tablet PC) from Samsung, HTC, LG, Sony, Huawei and many more

What I like better about the Hama screensharer adapter than, for example, the widely acclaimed Google Chromecaster: It simply transmits the screen, while the Chromecast only works with a special Google app, which then only transfers the content from the app can. To do this, you have to download various streaming apps from various TV stations. this is quite cumbersome for me and unnecessarily costs storage and electricity. Although there is also the option of transferring the entire screen with Google, this is well hidden and you can tell that this is not actually intended. My distrust in Google, which apparently wants to set its own standards here, is therefore great. Who knows if this feature will still be around in a few years.

The Hama screenshare adapter is installed via plug-and-play, the device is connected directly to the HDMI ™ connection by means of a gold-plated plug, and the power is supplied via the supplied USB cable. The screenshare adapter uses WLAN 802.11 b / g / n and transmits data at a speed of up to 150 Mbit / s. Even zooming can be transferred 1: 1 from the smartphone / tablet to the HDTV. In this way, presentations and pictures can be displayed as well as videos or streamed TV series and films.

A thoroughly practical device. However, the different transmission formats can be problematic: In my test, for example, the Hama Screenshare Adapter did not always work perfectly with my flat screen, which is now quite old, because it is 10 years old. I suspect the reason for this is a lack of compatibility with regard to the transmission formats. The Google Chromecast, on the other hand, worked flawlessly with my TV for a few days - and then led to an overload. So if you want to buy a suitable adapter, you should check carefully whether it is also compatible with your TV set. When transmitting with the PC monitor, there were sometimes disconnections: video transmission actually only works well when the mobile phone is directly in front of the monitor - despite the supplied antenna, which can be attached directly to the monitor with a practical magnet function. Unfortunately, this is a bit more complicated to handle than I would like. A practical device that not only allows me to display pictures and presentations on a large monitor, but also to watch television on the PC monitor. In terms of handling and transmission, however, I still have one or two things to improve.

4. Plus point for tablets and cell phones: the charger

Tablets, however, offer a plus point: small and handy chargers, which are also much easier to get back than the bulky chargers from Notebooks and Ultrabooks. Because it can happen to any of us that we are on an important journey Business-Leave the charger for your laptop, mobile phone, etc. at home or in the hotel when you travel. Whether there is help on site depends very much on the manufacturer's service.

I experienced this nightmare on a research trip to Estonia. I had carefully packed my tools: laptop, cell phone and the camera and accessories because I wanted to make several videos, including with the General Manager of Skype. At the airport, still in Germany, I remembered that I had the external microphone, the flash and my tripod with me for the camera - but not the charger. I flipped over my options for a moment: I still had about an hour to go before my scheduled departure, I lived about 15 minutes away - and it was too risky for me. Now I was lucky: I was on my way to Talinn, another European capital, not the Sahara desert. There should also be a suitable charger there.

5. Forgot charger: A problem with little chance of a solution

Incidentally, such problems can almost always occur on the go - for example because you leave your charger somewhere. With the amount of cables you carry around with you these days, it's no wonder. It is precisely in such situations that it comes back to us that each manufacturer has its own specifications for its devices: The devices are rarely compatible with each other, finding a replacement device is like gambling. Because how can you quickly find a shop on site in a foreign city that has a corresponding charger in stock? And what exactly do you do in such cases?

Of course, you could also go to the nearest electronics shop and, if you're lucky, simply ask for the charger. However, this is usually difficult because the chargers are not sold individually, but only together with the camera, cell phone or laptop. What helps here are specialized, small shops. But how do you find them? The first place to go is the manufacturer's website. In my case, my camera manufacturer Olympus offers an international dealer locator. However, it isn't light to find - I have to click on the "Cameras" product group on the start page and then find the retailer search under "Customer Service". That's not necessarily logical, linking the dealer search right in the footer of the website would have been better, but at least I can find a handful of dealers near the center of Tallinn and I'm lucky that one of them has a charger for me.

It could have been much more difficult with a different manufacturer and at a different location: With computer manufacturer Dell, for example, you won't find a dealer overview: Because Dell relies on direct sales, there are hardly any shops on site that can provide the appropriate replacement devices. However, the overall situation with the loss of chargers is unsatisfactory. Until the manufacturers have made improvements here, the only solution is actually help to help themselves: for example, when buying a device, buy a replacement charger at the same time - or to look specifically for devices that are more compatible with other devices. And meanwhile: Always take good care of the charger!

My conclusion: the simpler and lighter the better

A tablet has so far been a practical device to quickly get a few eMails or reading texts – things I can also do with my cell phone. So far, it has hardly been a full-fledged ultrabook replacement. The direct entry of notes via stylus has a future, but the handling should still be improved. In general, the further development of tabletTechnology especially in practical, easy-to-use apps and is therefore primarily a software problem. But maybe we're just too slaves to our habits - because so far I'd always prefer an ultrabook.

Nevertheless, in the end the small and light devices have the edge for me: I use them for most of them Tasks the mobile phone on the go, eg for the Communication. Chargers can be easily replaced here and it also fits comfortably in a jacket or bicycle pocket. I only take my laptop with me on longer train journeys and I would like that to become superfluous soon: that is when foldable screens become the rule and the cell phones can be operated with a Bluetooth keyboard - something I already do today like to do. I am looking forward to mobile work in the future
