Thanks iPhone, Notebook, Internal will turn off apparently more difficult: Many People keep working at home. According to a recent survey, only a third can switch off completely. The question is, however: Is it because of the Technology, which acts like an electronic ankle bracelet? Or do we simply have to learn, with the new freedoms clear get?
Electronic ankle bracelets are used, for example, to monitor convicts or people who are in custody in their own homes. Free and yet not free, so to speak. Kind of an ugly one Idea.
The crass thing, however, is that many employees do not behave much differently when they are actually in their free time fast still professional eMails Checking on a smartphone, preparing presentations on the laptop or continuing online from home.
According to the results of the recent Onlinesurvey by the Austrian portal karriere.at among 529 employees and 174 employers, this is more the rule than the exception. The question you have to ask yourself is: Is that a good thing because it also means more freedom for the individual? Or rather bad, because the technology acts like an invisible shackle?
In any case, the fact is: According to a survey by karriere.at, only 29 percent of those surveyed said at the end of a working day light to be able to switch off. Almost half of the survey participants (46 percent) check work emails at least occasionally after work.
18 percent of employees stated that they rarely left the job Head to get and continue to work regularly in your free time. Seven percent say they constantly think about their job, even outside of working hours, because their professional position demands it of them.
As expected, this trend is even more pronounced among employers and executives: the total 14 percent of the survey participants said they could never get out of the work process because of their responsible position at all.
A barely a third (31 per cent) of entrepreneurs regularly work from home. Almost four out of ten (38 per cent) stated that they were able to switch off, but at least sometimes also check emails in the private environment. After all, 17 percent of entrepreneurs manage to be fully private after the end of the evening.
Employees (529 participants)
Employer (174 participant):
What annoys me about such polls: Debt It's not the technology, at least not alone. But how we deal with it. Of course, the somewhat euphemistic "always on" being leads to constant stress and strain up to and including Burnout.
And of course the constant availability tempts people, especially in times of exciting professional projects, to log in briefly from home via cell phone or netbook. Or the Anxiety um den Workplace forces you to.
The actual reasons for this, however, often lie much deeper: many people who use technology at home are actually afraid of missing out on something. Or they simply find it nice to be needed. Or they are simply afraid of not getting any orders or their job verlierenif they are not always available.
All totally understandable and deeply human. Practically also a perfectionism problem - I have already written about the topic of fear elsewhere. But also everything Problemsthat existed before. Blaming technology for this is short-sighted: it only exacerbates existing problems.
Cell phone, emergencyebook Internet are only symbols for the change in Working world. Away from permanent 9-5 jobs and permanent offices towards more flexibility and freedom. Certainly caused by the technology. And yet: Just go offline, switching everything off is not the best Solution.
What is needed is a fundamental change in perspective: we cannot, on the one hand, seek a free, informal work life call out, but on the other hand we wish everything would be regulated as clearly as before.
The boundaries between private and professional life are becoming increasingly blurred. For some the horror concept par excellence ("Then I have no free time at all!"), For others a blessing ("Working is part of my life!").
We have to redefine how we deal with these changes: Each individual for themselves, but also as Society. We need to consider how to deal with the dangers of this situation (more on that tomorrow). Only one thing is clear: we will not be able to turn the wheel back. So whining is useless!
