1. SwinGolf and team building at Möhler Castle
Möhler was first mentioned in a document in the 11th century, and the main building of the later baroque moated castle still stands today. 1975 bought the Family Heinemann das Schloss, It was extensively restored in the 1990s, and part of the former baroque garden with strictly symmetrical boxwood beds and sculptures was restored according to the original plans.
Möhler Castle as an event location
Today several companies and tradespeople have settled here, including a restaurant, an architect and an engineering office, as well as photographers and designers. In addition, the castle has a whole range of different, exciting event locations, for example in the basement of the castle or in the servants' house, so that several events can take place here at the same time.
In addition to trade fairs and seminars, this includes team building activities such as raft building on the waters belonging to the castle, various Art– and craft workshops such as building and playing musical instruments together, archery and darts, curling in winter – and SwinGolf.
SwinGolf as a team building event
SwinGolf is a mixture of classic golf and mini golf - a trend from France that has inexorably conquered Europe in recent years. Castle owner Hans Heinemann, himself a passionate golf player, insists on instructing the groups personally even at the age of 82. The game is played with a kind of soft golf ball and a three-sided universal club, which makes it possible to play on almost any terrain.
Nevertheless, the health aspects due to the muscle-intensive exercise in the great outdoors are on a par with golf. In the castle park of Möhler is played on natural terrain, ie on lawn and over the spacious garden pond system . The highlight of every team event is when you then have to fish the balls out of the water with a pedal boat.
2. Kloster Herzebrock
Möhler Castle belongs to the municipality of Herzebrock-Clarholz in the Gütersloh district on the western edge of the Teutoburg Forest on the border with the Münsterland. The well-known household appliance company Miele was founded in 16.000 in the town with around 1899 inhabitants.
A place steeped in history
But Herzebrock-Clarholz can look back on a much longer history: In the second half of the 9th century the Benedictine monastery in Herzebrock was founded, in 1133 the Premonstratensian monastery in Clarholz, with which originally a female branch of the order in neighboring Lette.
Both monasteries owned extensive property in their immediate vicinity. Together with the Marienfeld monastery, they formed the rural estate in the Rheda rulership. In the course of secularization, the monasteries were dissolved in 1803 by the Counts of Bentheim-Tecklenburg and now belong to the Bentheim-Tecklenburg family.
Conferences in the local history museum
While the local museum of local history is housed in one part of the premises, the monastery garden is rented out for outdoor events.
Parking spaces are available, toilets, kitchen and cooling can be provided on request. Every two years, for example, the event Kunstgenuss am Kloster attracts over 1.000 visitors to sounds, light effects, music and culinary delicacies.
3. Castle Rheda
The royal family itself resides at the castle in Rheda, a few kilometers away, whose buildings date back to the 13th century.
Events in the historic garden
Outside the castle island there has been a geometric garden since 1623. In 1988 this was restored and based on plans from the 19th century spiegelt reflects the neo-baroque garden art. Guided tours take place in summer.
Sights include a carriage museum and a toy and costume collection, as well as the orangery in the castle park.
Days in the castle
Various rooms are also available for conferences and events, such as the orangery, the prince's room or the castle mill.
Since 2003, the country party "Spring in the Park" has been held every year on the grounds of the castle.
4. Brewery Stratosphere
Conferences in the brewery
Groups, dealers, innkeepers and the media can not only hold symposiums and specialist conferences here in the universe of beers, but also hold tastings, food pairings, beer menus and events such as brewing courses, craft beer and pleasure fairs.
For team events there is a beautifully located hop blossom tea house with a pool right next to it.
Beer tasting as a team building highlight
The location is also recommended because of the warmth of the management - three women in three generations - and the specialist knowledge of the staff.
The beer sommelier, Frau Wein, showed us the beer tasting with great enthusiasm.
5. New market hall in Herford
The New Market Hall in Herford has just opened. Dedicated and motivated traders await their guests with high-quality products from game meat to organic products to coffee roasters.
Conferences and events
The quality and the ambience give the market hall a unique atmosphere and unforgettable impressions.
But the market hall should not only be the hub for encounters and good food in the heart of Herford not far from the historic collegiate church, but can also be used for events and Teambuilding-Events to be booked:
Technical equipment and show kitchen
In addition to the hall, there is also a technically fully equipped seminar room for up to 80 people and a show kitchen for cooking events.
In any case, we enjoyed the food we cooked ourselves under expert guidance.
How convenient that on the opposite side of the street is the Hotel zur Fürstenabtei in a 400-year-old half-timbered house, which used to house the abbey-history is omnipresent in the 20-room-house and so one gets already at breakfast of portraits of the former ones Abbesses greeted.
6. The Marta Herford
The Marta Herford is a museum for contemporary art that opened in 2005 with a special focus on the references to architecture and design and a clear focus on international art of the 21st century. And it has an outstanding cultural-historical Significance.
It is conveniently located not far from the main train station with direct ICE connections to Berlin or Cologne. Around 70.000 visitors are drawn to Herford every year. 2500 square meters of exhibition space are available here. The basic idea was the bringing together of art, Economy and Society in a spectacular building designed by renowned Canadian architect Frank Gehry. Therefore, there are certain similarities to the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.
Designed by the architect Frank Gehry
The peculiarity of the building, which looks like a large sculpture, becomes clear at first sight clear: It is asymmetrical and appears to be composed of many convex and concave components made of red clinker stone, the stainless steel roofs are corrugated and rising. There are no windows on the street side, instead there are light shafts that look like broken chimneys from ocean liner.
Glass and stainless steel have been processed in the entrance area. On the inside, walls and ceilings are made of gypsum board, which is cut into pieces if necessary and for artistic experiments.
Rapper Tupac meets Rilke
There is also art in front of the museum: for example, a graffiti column, which is available to local artists and crowned by a statue of the shot rapper Tupac Shakur as a representative of youth culture, as well as a stainless steel ball by Luciano Fabro.
It belongs to a floor sculpture on the median of the Goebenstrasse passing the museum and shows a section of the poem “The Ball” by Rainer Maria Rilke.
For meetings conferences seminars
According to the desire to bring together business, society and art, the building is much more than a museum: it is an event and conference location and a cultural meeting place. For larger events such as product presentations, small fairs, gala shows or film screenings, the Marta Forum can be booked with 380 m² space and for up to 280 people in flexible chair series.
With a room height of 12 meters and the curved walls, the room implements the exterior architecture inside as well. The forum costs, in Combination with the lobby, for 150 people 2.350 euros, for 200 people 2.600 euros and from 200 people 2.850 euros. For smaller events, there are three seminar rooms that can also be flexibly combined and are suitable for a maximum of 80 people in rows of chairs. They cost from 250 euros.
But the museum also has an exciting one Conceptto bring art closer to companies, for example by linking events to a museum tour. In addition, the conference guests can be creative themselves in the in-house studio, there are seminars for companies on the topic "What is art" and also exhibitions with products of the respective Company are possible. Participate, make art yourself is the motto of MARTA, which wants to be more than just an exhibition space.
That such Projects was realized at all in a small town like Herford is connected to the importance of Herford for the furniture and clothing industry since the beginning of the 20th century - and is itself a very interesting story. This highly productive and globally active economic structure brought committed minds to the world in 1996 Idea, to set an unmistakable sign in the region.
The story of Marta Herford
First, a “house of furniture” was planned. Then the idea came up to add a furniture design museum to it. It came about through personal contacts Contact zu Gehry, who was finally commissioned with a design for the building, which was implemented from 2001 for a total of 30 million euros.
The name of the museum, Marta stands as a short form for furniture art (architecture). A symbol for this symbiosis, Gegry also included the building part of a former textile factory, erected by the architect Walter Lippold on the grounds, largely unchanged. In this Lippold building, various furniture companies, which are also partners of the not-for-profit Museum-GmbH, now have their offices.
7. Team building and outdoor seminars in the countryside
In the Teutoburg Forest there are also other exciting team building offers: For example the outdoor seminar concept by RioNegro Canoe and Outdoor Events in Bad Salzuflen, whose corporate customers include Bertelsmann, Dr. Oetker counting Telecom, Pro 7 or UPS. But the offer is of course also aimed at families, groups of friends, clubs and school classes from the 4. Class.
RioNegro offers not only canoe trips for up to 350 people (per boat maximum 4 persons and from 25 Euro per person and distance from April to the end of September) or outdoor and teambuilding like archery or orientation tours, but also the rare opportunity seminars in green surroundings and in the truest sense of the word. The participants can use an outdoor display wall and an outdoor flipchart and even move around in groups during the creative phases.
Raft building and canoeing
The program also includes experiential educational offers such as building a raft together. Managing Director Stephanie Isenberg is a qualified teacher, some of the Employees are trained trainers or coaches. Managing Director Guido Schmidt takes a close look to see whether the planned team building is taking place in the time available useful can be done and says potential customers even if he does not see a certain quality requirement. In addition to seminars and team building, there are of course also pure Fun– and incentive events possible.
Our planned canoe tour started unpleasantly for the time being: it literally fell into the water because of rain and high water levels. It turns out that the RioNegro is also prepared for bad weather: For archery, raft building or the outdoor seminar, tarpaulins and tents or yurts are set up in the garden when needed, in each of which 30-50 people are around the campfire Have space. This way, events can take place outside the year, but in addition, RioNegro also offers a seminar house where up to 30 people can stay overnight in shared rooms and dormitories - cost 1115 Euro for four days. Seminars can accommodate up to 50 people.
Exciting exchange preprogrammed
While the house is only rented to one group at a time, it is definitely part of the concept that there are very different groups on the premises, which can sometimes mix - and that's how trainees meet Executives or the local sports club to the international sales force of a group - exciting encounters and exchanges are inevitable.
Also catering is provided: for example, there is a kitchen, barbecues and campfire for the dinner, the food is delivered by a local catering company - on request including breakfast and packed lunches. In general, cooperations with regional bus companies, campsites or the H2O, a very nice, municipal water park with a large sauna area in nearby Herford, important for RioNegro:
The company itself employs up to 70 seasonal employees in the summer and has a large network of partner companies, so it can react flexibly to inquiries at short notice: The company may be able to get something up on the same day, but small ones should also Groups inquire at least one week in advance, but for companies and canoe tours lasting several days, we recommend a year in advance. Important for international groups: With the appropriate preparation time, instructions can even be given in French, Spanish, Polish or Russian.
8. Corporate Health and Business in Bad Salzuflen
In general, Bad Salzuflen really convinced me as a city. She is not only as Businesslocation, but also with many corporate health offers absolutely recommendable.
Historic pearl of salt
The town of Uflon and the saltworks were first mentioned in a document as early as the middle of the 11th century, and in 1322 municipal rights were granted. The first graduation tower was built in 1767, the Princely Lippische Solbad Salzuflen was founded in 1818, and the thermal health resort has been known as the bath since 1914. In 2015 the city was named an allergy-friendly municipality.
The beautiful inner city has fascinated me with an original architecture still preserved, such as the old vicarage - it is the oldest still existing house from the year 1520. The city is, however, very special thanks to the graduation work, the most modern in Europe, which was completely renovated a few years ago and 2013 was reopened:
Here you can breathe in the middle of East Westphalia during a walk quasi sea air. Deep breath is especially recommended in the lying in the graduation mill chamber - here is the salty air in highly concentrated form, so a stay only for a maximum of 20 minute is advised.
Various spa facilities have been established around the graduation house, including the Vitality Center, which offers a variety of treatments - such as water aerobics, massages, respiratory therapy or moor packs. With the latter, you are wrapped in fresh mud, after which the mud is processed and returned to nature - a very ecological health benefit. Greetings from the trending topic of corporate health. The Kurpark is currently being extensively renovated and was therefore not accessible, but the Seeterassen restaurant is in the middle of the overall beautiful park in a beautiful location directly on the Parksee with an outdoor area and winter garden and also convinces with culinary delights German-Italian dishes.
Business-City Bad Salzuflen
But Bad Salzuflen is not only a spa but also a trade fair city and therefore also interesting for business travelers and conference guests. For example, the world's largest custom bike fair, the Horsica or the ZOW take place here.
And the hotels are also geared toward a corresponding business clientele: our Hotel Arminius, for example, is a merger of six historic half-timbered houses of the 16. Century, which was lovingly restored between 1990 and 1992 and supplemented by two new houses. The 71 rooms and suites, for example, are all designed differently and still breathe some historical flair with old beams and romantic furniture. The breakfast is taken in the very beautiful, light-filled conservatory. For meetings, the Knight's Hall is available for up to 60 persons and the fireplace room for up to 20 persons.
Overall, you should not expect a luxurious or hip ambience in Bad Salzuflen: The city impresses with seminars and conferences as well as in the health sector through a down-to-earth offer and a outstanding price-performance ratio - ideal for companies from North Rhine-Westphalia, Northern Germany or Berlin, the looking for cheap accommodation with good quality and short access routes.
But for more exclusive demands, the region has to offer venues with a vengeance - for more information, see the second part of my article.
9. Team building and outdoor activities - Externsteine and Herrmannsdenkmal
But finally I would like to take a look at the most famous location in this region, which is also suitable for team building and outdoor events: The Externsteine. During my visit, it was my luck that I was still quite early in the morning, because around noon one group of visitors was practically chasing the next and the space is limited, especially on the stones and the steep stairs.
Perfect outdoor and hiking location
The Externsteine are clearly the perfect outdoor and hiking location: It is not even clear for what purpose the imposing stone formation was actually used in prehistoric times:
Already in the middle of the 16th century they were interpreted as a Germanic sanctuary, as an observatory or cult place, an interpretation that remained popular until 1945 and is still represented today by local historians and esotericists. Archaeological excavations, however, did not provide any clear evidence of cultic use in prehistoric or early historical times, but only document human activities for the early High Middle Ages.
Hiking on the Hermannshöhen
From the Externsteinen I hiked along the much emptier Hermannshöhe to Berlebeck. After a very short detour to the Adlerwarte I took bus number 792 and drove on to the Hermannsdenkmal.
This tourist line conveniently connects all the sights between Detmold and Bad Pyrmont every hour and runs until 20 p.m., so that this region can also be visited very easily by public transport and you can interrupt your hike at any time.
Enjoy the view from the Hermannsdenkmal
The Herrmannsdenkmal is a 1838 meter high statue built between 1875 and 26, which is supposed to represent the Cheruscan prince Arminius, who with the united Germanic tribes defeated three Roman legions under Varus in the year 9 AD and thus a further expansion of the Imperium Romanum east of the Rheins prevented.
But Hermann is neither the correct translation of Arminius nor did the battle actually take place in the Teutoburg Forest - archaeologists are much more likely to locate it in the Kalkriesen near Osnabrück and so the Hermann Monument is to be understood more as a monument of the völkisch-national movement in the German Empire, that through the third Rich has a rather ambivalent meaning.
What really pleased me and the three euro entrance is really worth it is the panoramic view of the Teutoburger Wald and the surrounding cities from the viewing platform below the statue. From here I also went on the last stage of my hike: from Hermannsdenkmal down to LWL Freilichtmuseum Detmold, which provided great insights into the everyday culture of the last centuries in Germany.
Conclusion: The ideal region for meetings and team building
Overall, the Teutoburg Forest region surprised me very positively with its numerous sights and the great connection between high culture, beautiful nature and history.
It is also the perfect location for business, conferences, team building and the supporting program and a very good starting point for numerous sporting activities.
