The path to vocational training

However, depending on your educational goal, you have different contact persons and must also meet different requirements. However, you do not have a legal right to help, no matter what form it takes! Further Training and training usually only convey theoretical content, if necessary there are practical parts (e.g. individual practice hours, internships), while the training is organized in a dual manner, i.e. it includes theory and practice in equal measure. If you want to know which form of education is suitable for you, you should read on here. Please also note: In the case of further professional qualification, the employment office distinguishes between the Measures to promote further vocational training (that's the official name in the law, which can simply be abbreviated to further training) and the no less monstrous-sounding measures to improve the prospects of integration, to be described succinctly as training.

If you are looking for an apprenticeship (e.g. as a school leaver) or have no idea what you want to do, then you have come to the right place at careers advice. Please note: The BA assumes that Boy People up to their 25th birthday have fewer problems finding an apprenticeship position - and that it is much more difficult to get a suitable position after that. The employment office does not put any obstacles in the way of the civil servant, who discovered his love for the craft at the age of 50 and wants to do an apprenticeship as a carpenter. But it will be difficult for him to find an apprenticeship, and most careers advisers will be skeptical too Consulting and withhold job placement. Therefore, going to careers advice will bring him little!

If you want to go to a careers adviser, you can make an appointment either at the employment office or at your school (careers advisers come to many schools about once a month). However, don't expect too much from one like this Conversation... As someone seeking advice, you can contribute a great deal to the success of the conversation. It is important that you come to the consultation with realistic expectations. For example, if you want to do an apprenticeship as an IT specialist, but just barely managed to get your high school diploma, you probably don't have a good chance of getting one of the coveted apprenticeship positions. And your career counselor will give you little hope. That can be a big disappointment. But before you go home unhappy and complaining about the advisor, you can just as well get help. A good career counselor will now find out: what interests you about him Job, what skills do you bring with you? And what other jobs suit you?

When you're still at school, it's difficult to identify your own interests, strengths and skills weaknesses to assess realistically. In addition, with the large range of information and advice on offer light loses track. The employment office can only advise and provide information, but cannot make your choice of career for you. Therefore, you should not come to counseling expecting to be presented with the perfect plan for your future career, even if it is for sure would be very nice. Become active yourself and show that you are committed to finding the right job. The guidance counselor will be happy to know what you want - and to support you in getting it.

If you have absolutely no idea what you want to do, the careers adviser will start by talking to you about your favorite subjects at school, hobbies and preferences: when do you become deeply committed to something? And in what context? What did you like about it? For example, a student who often helps his father with the gardening - the perfect future gardener? Or does he just like doing it because he gets a reward afterwards? Should a girl who enjoys helping out in a shop become a retail clerk? Or does she only like dealing with people, while she has no interest in the job itself? In addition to your interests, it always depends on whether you are suitable for a job. Despite all your enthusiasm for computers: With a five in math you would hardly have a chance of a "computer job". The careers advisor will usually evaluate your chances very realistically - and that can sometimes hurt. But even if it is difficult: Be Honestly. If you hide something, you're only cutting yourself in the foot. The consultant helps you to structure and collect your information, he also takes assessments from other people. But he's only human. If you don't like something about the counseling, say so openly so that it gets better. But it may also be the case that you don't get along with the consultant as a person at all. Then you should try to change the advisor. Of course, this is not easy, but you could try, for example, via the careers adviser's line manager. Your advisor should tell you this if you wish. It's always better than never going to careers counseling again because of a bad experience. You will then, of course, make a new appointment with the new careers adviser.

A careers advisor helps you like a tool

It's about, Order in your Head bring to. He is neither omniscient nor infallible. But uncomfortable: Finding out more about your own strengths and weaknesses sometimes hurts. And decidewhat you want, you must all alone.

It is a great advantage if you are already in front of the consultation clear do what you want and what not. For example, write down all your likes and dislikes, hobbies, etc. on a list. You relieve the consultant of a lot of work and he then has more time to clarify other things with you. To help you, you can work through the Mach's Right folder, which you may have received at school. There are numerous here Checklists and personality tests to help you gauge your abilities. Under http://www.machs-richtig.de you will also find a career choice program. But don't always believe everything that comes out of the tests, because they are very general. Be honest and see if you recognize yourself in the result.

The right job

If you already know where your interests lie: all the better. Then you can start your career choice with the advisor. Maybe you already have approximate ideas, which way you want to go and now you want to know more about it. Ask So be sure to look it up during the consultation. The employment office also organizes lectures on careers orientation. However, a careers advisor is not a walking encyclopedia and does not have all the professions and career paths in mind. Above all, he is familiar with professions that require legally regulated training. On the other hand, if you are looking for a job with unregulated access or without any training at all - eg temporary work, jobs in the artistic field or similar - you are probably in the wrong place with a careers advisor. Do not be intimidated by any unfriendly reactions to your questions: the consultant may be having a bad day.

Or you asked him something he doesn't know and he's embarrassed, which he doesn't want to admit now. In general, the advisor will also advise you to have a regular apprenticeship. The BA simply has more experience with this. Although careers advice does not have to be oriented to the market as much as job advice, the main concern here is that you do not become unemployed - this is the case with jobs without training or with unregulated access Risks but higher. You should be clear about that. So if you notice that you are not getting anywhere with the advice, for whatever reason: become active yourself and find out more about your dream job, for example from professional associations and people who are already doing the job. Your careers advisor may be able to give you addresses or tell you where to get them. A good place to go is the BIZ, which has a wide range of career information for young people in particular, some of which can also be used at home.

What else can career counseling offer you?

It is better to find out about job profiles before the careers advice service and saves time and frustration. If you show the counselor that you're actively trying, that you already know what you want, and that you're not leaving everything to them, they'll become more involved.

You have the opportunity to get a place for a trial internship through careers advice and to get to know employers at trade fairs. Of course, career counseling is also a job agency that will support you in finding suitable company or school training and will provide you with appropriate addresses and application tips. In certain cases, financial support for the training is even possible. If you want to obtain further qualifications before starting your apprenticeship, you can find out more about pre-apprenticeship courses from the counseling service.

Further training, advanced training, retraining

Officially, there are regulations for the promotion of further vocational training. In the internal language of the employment office there are also differences between retraining, further training and job adjustment, terms that you may have already heard and which should therefore be briefly explained. But: Although the employment office addresses different groups here, it supports them all according to the same conditions and in the same way, in which Implementation so there are no differences!

Then a training course is for you useful, if you can no longer find a job with your previous training and therefore need or want to continue your education on the basis of your current skills. This includes the businessman who wants to do his business administration, as well as the journeyman who wants to take his master's examination. But the unskilled worker without a professional qualification, which he now wants to catch up on, can also apply for further training.

With retraining, you learn a trade from scratch, so it is a kind of second training that can last up to two years. If you have previous knowledge that the retraining can build on, you have a better chance of being promoted - because then the retraining will be shorter and cheaper.

What is a job adjustment?

The employment office traditionally describes professional adjustment as further training for people who have concentrated on raising children for a maximum of 15 years and now want to work in their old job again. An accountant, who can continue to use her specialist knowledge but has to learn how to use the computer before she can return to work, can be given the job center's help Financing provide appropriate training. Unlike in the past, however, there are no longer any special regulations for people returning to work. Anyone who wants to go back to their previous job, like all other people willing to continue their education, will only receive funding if they have real chances on the job market.

The duration of such courses varies greatly, ranging from one week to two years. It depends on what is to be conveyed. Since each participant has different previous knowledge, on which the further training should build, many training providers no longer work with a complete course, but with "modules" that you can enter and exit depending on your previous knowledge. So you can choose exactly those parts of the further training in which you can close gaps. This also makes the measures cheaper.

When and how to get advanced training

From the point of view of the employment office, the further training must help to end unemployment or prevent one from becoming unemployed. However, you should also show that you have tried hard to find a new job without further training. Here, too, the “diary” (see page 20 f.) can provide you with valuable services. Previously, unless you were returning to work, you had to have worked for at least 12 months in the last three years and received unemployment benefits or assistance. Since January 2005, anyone receiving unemployment benefit II has been able to receive further training if it brings them back to work. (Note: Due to the ongoing changes in the law, something may change here.)

If you are a roofer and your doctor certifies that you can no longer work due to back problems, you have a good chance of receiving an education voucher. Likewise as a florist who can no longer find a job where she lives because of her Family but cannot move and now wants to become a geriatric nurse. However, there is no "right" to funding, even if the further training is listed in KURS - because the measures are only listed here. The job advisor will check very carefully whether there is another possibility, for example whether employment as an unskilled worker is an option, whether there is a suitable position elsewhere or whether you can perhaps do an apprenticeship after all. Your professional and personal skills should be suitable for the new job. In addition, the employment office will only support your further training if you can later find a new job as a result. A druggist who wants to retrain as a chemical laboratory assistant because he can then work in a specific chemical company has better prospects than an office clerk who wants to become a make-up artist with no employment prospects.

The employment office issues training vouchers for all further training, which you only receive after detailed advice from the employment advisor - if you meet the conditions and the advisor agrees. The employment office leaves the initiative to you. Your advantage: You can find a training measure that is exactly tailored to your needs needs is tailored and is not simply imposed on you. The disadvantage: You are on your own when looking for a suitable training measure. Therefore, to prevent you from choosing the wrong one, the duration and learning objective are clearly defined on the vouchers.

Get active yourself!

If you now have to look for a suitable further training course yourself, the KURS database or another database is the right choice. Here you will find so-called educational institutions (institutions, clubs, schools, training workshops, etc.), most of which have been certified as being of sufficient quality (“certification”). In order to be recognised, the provider must fulfill the following conditions, for example: suitable rooms and reasonable teaching conditions, lecturers with sufficient qualifications qualification, which they have to prove with certificates, among other things. The training provider also undertakes to support you later when you reintegrate into work. This gives you at least a certain amount of certainty that you will receive good further training.

Further information: 60 Online-Databases via meta search engine http://www.IWWB.de. Stiftung Warentest (www.weiterbildungstest.de, Issue 12/2003) shows: deficiencies in 14 databases, especially in the topicality. COURSE (above http://www.arbeitsagentur.de) received the grade 3,0.

If you have specific questions about individual measures, your employment advisor will certainly be able to help you. But feel free to take one Contact to various educational institutions or – even better – make an appointment and go there! It's best to find out on-site whether the people nice and the teaching conditions are good, i.e. whether you will feel comfortable here - very important for your learning success! For example, ask how many participants there are per class, whether the teachers change frequently, how many breaks there are, and how many lessons you have in a day. As a heavy smoker, you probably need one System with lots of little breaks and if you're the kind of person who likes everything possible fast gets over it, a three-hour-a-day rhythm is not for you!

Also make contact with people who have already completed your measures or are still involved, for example via the bulletin board at the "school", via the educational institution or the job advisor; Although they are of course not allowed to give out addresses because of data protection, you may be able to contact graduates in individual cases. And: Of course you can only do the further training that is also suitable for you, for example you cannot become a European secretary if you do not have a high school diploma.

What is paid?

With the education voucher, the employment office primarily takes care of that Costs of the course. This includes learning materials and work clothes as well as examination pieces and examination fees. In addition, the employment office will pay you a flat rate for travel expenses to the educational institution. It is therefore advantageous if the further training takes place as close as possible to your place of residence, because this costs the BA less Money – and your sponsorship becomes more likely. If there is no suitable measure taking place nearby, you will also be reimbursed for the costs of accommodation and meals. It is usually irrelevant whether the measure takes place in another federal state. In some cases, this is not possible otherwise, because certain measures are taken Germancarried out only in a few places nationwide.

If you receive unemployment benefit I or II, you will receive alimony to cover your living expenses. If you work while continuing your education, the requirements are reduced accordingly. During the training period, you are automatically included in the statutory health and nursing care insurance. If you had pension insurance in the last year before the start of your further education, you will remain so; if not, you can submit a corresponding application. If necessary, the BA will take over all insurances. You are always insured against accidents during the training and the journey there. If the further training is carried out during an existing employment relationship, your employer can receive a subsidy towards your wages. He also gets money if he enables you to obtain a professional qualification and hires an unemployed person as a substitute.

You can find out more about the conditions for further training in the brochures “Promotion of further training” and “What? how much? who? Financial aid from the employment office at a glance”.
Training

Training measures are officially called “measures to improve prospects for integration”. They usually last no longer than twelve weeks. They are intended to support you in career orientation and improve your chances of finding a job: for example through languageCourses, application coaching or business start-up advice. Examples: an office worker who needs Excel skills for her new job. Or the warehouse worker with a concrete prospect of a job – the only thing missing is a forklift license. The training measures also include "aptitude assessments" - psychological tests that the BA uses to check whether and what you can (and want) to work. These measures, which at first glance seem quite different, have one thing in common: they are intended to make it easier to get back to work. The condition is, of course, that you are unemployed or at least threatened with unemployment. An advantage: In contrast to further training, you do not necessarily have to be entitled to unemployment benefit I or II. That's not the only thing that makes the training measures so attractive: the employment office organizes this measure itself. You don't have to bother with the education voucher. In addition, training measures are shorter than long-term further training. If a training measure is carried out while you are on the job, your employer can receive a subsidy.

Training measures are cheaper than further training and are therefore more frequently funded. They usually lead to faster results, but do not have to be worse. You can find out more about the conditions for training measures in the brochure “was? how much? who? Financial aid from the employment office at a glance”.

At the employment counselor: your tactics for a promotion

In order for your desire for further education or training to be promoted at all, there must be a "necessity" for it. In plain language: The BA will only support you if your unemployment can be averted or if you have no other way of finding a job than further training. Some examples: If you cannot move to another city for a job because you have family. Or if you have already been offered a position in the new factory for which you need specific additional qualifications. But even in these cases you have no legal right, you can only hope that the employment counselor agrees with your request.

Before each counseling session, make it clear to yourself that it will not be easy to receive funding. But with good arguments you might be able to convince the consultant. Don't say, "I don't have any Lust work around more", but argue: "If I continue to work as an unskilled worker, I'll soon be back on the street." Then you would receive unemployment benefits - and that's what the employment office wants to avoid. Therefore, people will consider whether it is worth financing your professional qualification. Think about which of the funding conditions apply to you the most. Make a list of all arguments - and all counter-arguments - to test how valid your argument really is. Be tactical: provide the employment counselor with really good arguments as to why you won't get anywhere without further education/training.

Don't be too disappointed if it doesn't work out. Perhaps the employment counselor really has no more funds - if the pot is empty, nothing can be funded anymore. Do not try to talk heatedly to the advisor, but remain calm and objective - this will bring you plus points, also with regard to later consultations. It might not be the last time you need to see your employment counselor. Meet him. Be clear: he might want to help you, but he doesn't have the financial means. So you offer cheaper variants of your own accord – eg simple training measures or individual further training modules. The employment counselor then sees that you have thought about it and informed him that you support him in his work and that you are willing to actively improve your situation. He will then be all the more willing to support you. Ultimately, getting what you want is also a matter of luck. Much depends on the right chemistry between you and your advisor. If this is not correct, you can go to your consultant's line manager or team leader, whom they should name if you wish, and ask politely about the possibility of going to another consultant. You shouldn't ask for this, because a change isn't actually planned, but your request will be taken into account in individual cases.

Education, further education and training – how do I get what I want?

Now it may not have worked out with the desired funding. But before you leave the field and grumble about the job center at home, you should first think again. Why do you want to do further education or training? Would such a measure really help you, for example significantly improve your chances of finding a new job? Or was it just a desperate idea because you want to do something to avoid unemployment? Your personal profile (remember the "virtual job market") can also help you to clarify this question: Compare the requirements of job offers that would appeal to you and correspond to your skills with your information - where can be improved, with that Are your chances of getting the job you want increasing? Discuss this again with your employment advisor.

Costs and funding

If it is clear that the further training will really benefit you and you absolutely want to do it, you should first obtain offers from various training providers that are suitable. Since you pay for the further education or training yourself, you now have it Choice between all providers. But of course you don't want to throw your money out the window and find the best and most suitable offer for you. The costs for further education and training can vary greatly. Look for the certifications, as they guarantee a certain quality, and be sure to inquire whether the exam you take at the end of the training is also state-recognized! You have already found out what else you need to watch out for in the section on the subject of “Becoming active yourself” (page 63 f.).

In the examples presented here, the exam fees are between 260 and 450 _, depending on the type of degree. It is comparatively "cheap" for you to become your master craftsman, for example as an electrical engineer: Here, for example, you pay 760 for 80 hours of specialist theory and around 2800 hours of self-learning on special computers.

Example: costs for a training session

At a chamber of crafts, for example, you pay _ 12 for a start-up seminar (2 hours over 40 days) and _ 33 for a course in "Spreadsheet I: MS-Excel" (330 hours of instruction over three days). A private training provider charges _ 2000 for a basic course in Excel 1/XP (duration: 207,64 day with seven lessons). However, only a maximum of eight participants per course are allowed here, which promises a better learning atmosphere. An English language course with the same provider costs between _ 420 (for basic languageCourses) and _ 500 (for professional languageCourses and conversation) - all courses with a total of 60 lessons. For comparison, the prices at an adult education center: 26 lessons, regardless of the level, cost a total of 72,80 _ here, if more than 10 people take part in the course, the price drops to 52 _. Bigger classes are of course bad for it Things to Learn and adult education courses generally don't have the best reputation - maybe you're just paying for the private provider's image? What is better can certainly only be said in individual cases and not in general!

Example: Costs for further training

Incidentally, it gets really expensive if you want to catch up on an entire training course: A further training course to become a European secretary with a total of around 4800 hours of instruction (30 months of full-time instruction) costs 12 _ at one institute and 000 _ at another provider – but with only about half of the lessons. An intensive part-time course to become a specialist in human resources (duration: 10 months, approx. 400 hours/week) costs _ 4 with one provider, but you would only pay _ 12 with the competition for a six-month course (3000 hours of instruction in total). If you then want to add business administration to specialist business administration, you can calculate 460 _ for a course with 2875 teaching hours, for example. Incidentally, in someCourses the exam and the fees for it are already included, with other providers you have to do and pay for them separately.

Research carefully

Result: You should research carefully in any case, so that you get the broadest possible overview of the various offers. Look closely! How many lessons does the course have, how are they distributed, is it suitable for me? And also note that a lesson is not just a lesson: the basic assumption is 45 minutes per lesson, but with some providers it can be more or less. Then you should (possibly together with the job advisor) consider suitable financing options. Are there perhaps continuing education loans, master grants or special savings contracts for your own continuing education provision? Consider: Individual modules and training measures are just as cheaper as external exams, where you don't do any training, but only take the exam. For example, you can take an external examination as a forwarding agent if you have worked as a professional driver in a forwarding company for at least six years and have thus acquired the necessary specialist knowledge - then the IHK will allow you to take the final examination, even if you have not previously taken a corresponding course. You then only pay the examination fee. In detail, however, it depends on the examination regulations for the desired profession as to whether this inexpensive method is possible.

In the case of an external examination, however, think carefully about whether you really dare to do this self-study, because it requires a lot of self-discipline. Find out how high the success rate is, because in some training courses tricks are taught in addition to the subject matter, without which you cannot even pass the exam. Here, too, it is best to ask the course participants (contact again via the bulletin board, the "school" or the job advisor) in order to get an objective picture. However, there is no such thing as absolute certainty. In the end, it is your own will to pass the exam that counts.

A self-financed further education or training measure is only worthwhile if you are really convinced that it will get you a new job. Inquire about all offers, modules and financing options.

What's the point?

The following applies in all cases (education voucher, training measure, self-financing): If you have time, work and maybe money investIn order to improve your professional situation, you naturally also want to know whether the effort is worth it. Unfortunately, the unsatisfactory answer: Nobody can really tell you that. It may be that a measure that has benefited 50 people will not benefit you at all and vice versa, it depends on various factors such as your personality, the specific labor market situation, your region, etc. After all, statistics from the BA show that around 60% of the participants in further training are no longer unemployed six months after completing them. However, this group includes not only employees who are subject to social security contributions, but also, for example, the self-employed. Younger graduates and better qualified workers – such as those who are catching up on a vocational qualification – have better chances of finding a job after completing a measure. Of the training measures, those that were carried out directly in the company are obviously special successfully. However, the statistics from the BA do not show which professions are practiced afterwards and whether these have anything to do with further education or training - bear this in mind when interpreting!

Therefore, if you receive financial support and believe that it will improve your situation, you should definitely take advantage of this opportunity. With the modular system, you can influence the type and duration of the further training yourself, adapt it individually and no longer need to learn things that you already know. If you have a specific Objective follow and assume that you will get a job after further education or training, for example in our example with the forklift license, the measure will definitely bring something. Then the chance of being promoted is correspondingly high. And even if you finance a further education on your own out of the blue, it does not necessarily have to be crowned with failure. If further training for a certain job was so important to you, chances are good that you will look for a job afterwards with the same enthusiasm. But: In no case can anyone give you a guarantee that the job will actually work out.

Don't forget: Clarify during training, education and further training...
