Applications are individual, personal and none is like the other. But there is one thing in common: Almost every one Application has at least one mistake that HR managers notice. Because they read applications every day and have a trained Eye for the most common mistakes. We have listed some of them here.

5 typical application details: So please do not!

A personal Write to, creative lead stories, crisp introductory sentences and a short but meaningful one Curriculum vitae - the perfect application can be a lot, just not boring. In an effort to write a particularly unusual application that gets noticed, however, some shoot over that Objective out. You should definitely avoid the following five application failures.

Fail 1: Selfies, Bikini Pictures and Co.

Beach photos from the last holiday and a selfie in front of spectacular scenery are undoubtedly great pictures - for the photo album, but not for the application. Depending on the job, it may not always be the rigid application form, but appropriate clothing, professional lighting and a neutral background are always recommended.

The visit to the photographer should therefore be planned into the application phase. He will be happy to advise you on the right format and posture. It doesn't have to be the standard image, but the quality should be right. A golden rule for the Choice of the outfit also says: Anyone who wears what they wear at work is well advised.

Fail 2: I can do it all!

Of course you want to present yourself as well as possible in an application and it is also allowed to exaggerate something in one or the other place. But what is not well received: The statement "I speak English fluently" if the actual knowledge does not go beyond a low school level.

It is not uncommon for such information to be given in job interview checked, for example with an unannounced and sudden switch to the foreign language during the conversation. Anyone who is then unable to react will be caught lying – not a good start. Therefore: Always stick to the truth. This also ensures that you don't end up in a position that you are not up to.

Fail 3: mass instead of class

Anyone who has ever completed an application marathon knows how much work it takes to customize the application for each potential new employer. The temptation to use a general cover letter for all applications is therefore great. As a rule, such is not good. For applications by mail or eMail should therefore always be individually tailored to the Companys Coordinated cover letter should be part of the application. The only exception: the mobile application via app.

Job Apps offer a simple Alternatives to the lengthy application: anyone who has saved their CV, personal data and documents once can do this easily and fast use to apply – by swiping. If a job posting is swiped to the right, the application is sent to the company. If users swipe left, the offer is deleted. Why isn't customization necessary here? Because the companies know that this is not possible via app application. For those who find it difficult to personalize the cover letter, such apps are a great alternative. But the same applies here: If the employer is interested and requests additional documents, these must also be tailored to the company.

Fail 3: No-content filler words

Those who are unsure often fall back on empty phrases. Suddenly everyone Candidate creative, innovative, motivated and flexible. All characteristics that potential employers appreciate, but which are now being used in an inflationary manner and are therefore being devalued. The better option:

give case studies. The excellent team performance in the last Projects contributed significantly to the successful conclusion? Great, that speaks for real Teamwork. An innovative one Idea was taken up and implemented? This shows that the idea was not only innovative, but actually feasible. Such statements stick. A mere list of supposed ones Power on the other hand is interchangeable and meaningless.

Fail 4: Hello, hello and hello?

Depending on Industry a relaxed tone can sometimes be struck in an application. Anyone who applies to a creative start-up will certainly choose a different approach to the application than someone who applies to a bank for a position with customer contact. Is in Order and in many cases desired.

What is always important, however, is the appropriate form of address, which must be polite, contain a name and no typos. A “Hello, Mr. XY” has just as little place in an application as a general “Dear Sir or Madam”. If you want to make a good impression, ask in advance for the name of the contact person and greet politely with “Dear Ms. XY”.

Fail 5: Long, longer, longest.

Anyone who thinks that a long application is interesting because it shows how much the applicant has already experienced is wrong. Brevity is the soul of wit. HR have no Fun on page-long application novels. In fact, the application is usually only roughly skimmed through for the first time.

Therefore, the rule applies: Short, crisp sentences, the most important information first and only mention the topics that are really relevant for the new job. All other topics can be found in Job Interview addressed or mentioned in bullet points in the tabular curriculum vitae, but they have no place in the cover letter.
