Paradigm shift or inexperience

The big surprise beforehand: Germany's interns are apparently happier than you should think. In addition, it is - no wonder - mobile, but the contacts with the employer are above all private.

Unfortunately, neither the study nor the press release contain any information on how exactly the figures were collected. After all: the one from Absolventa and the HR-Consulting firm Clevis conducted study enrolled more than 7.500 interns nationwide. According to this, 82 percent of those surveyed were satisfied with their internship.

Who is the most satisfied?

The most satisfied are the trainees who work in the pharmaceutical industry - on a scale from 1 (not satisfied) to 5 (very satisfied) Companys from this area an evaluation of 4,35.

Follow at the top of the popularity scale IT– and telecom companies (4,27) and retail segment employers (4,20). At the bottom, on the other hand, are the media and Marketing-Employers who are rated rather poorly (3,76).

To satisfaction of the interns is due to the fact that almost all jobs (94 percent) are remunerated. The average salary in Germany is 736 euros, which is low in an international comparison. In the other European countries, an average of 944 euros is earned.

However, the pay packet is filled differently depending on the degree. So to earn Men with a master's degree average 829 euros, but only 729 euros with a bachelor's degree. Incidentally, interns each receive 30 euros less. Interns in the north earn the most - Hamburg (832 euros) and Bremen (790 euros) are at the top of the payroll list.

In last place are Saxony (543 euros) and Thuringia (504 euros). However, the young professionals are not satisfied with this: only 43 percent of the study participants think so salary to be appropriate – the degree of satisfaction in this respect for interns abroad is 55 percent clear higher.

Extensive arrival or change of residence no obstacle

In order to recommend themselves for a later employment, interns partly take a long journey on themselves. For example, 53 percent of respondents stated that they had even changed their place of residence for their internship. For an additional 27 percent, the employer is located 300 kilometers away.

However, the willingness to pursue an internship abroad is currently not particularly pronounced. Although every second trainee has said that he lived abroad at least once for at least half a year - but only one in thirteen went on an internship. For these, Switzerland, Austria and the UK are the most popular workplaces across the borders.

Private network as a link to the employer

Only nine percent of interns are offered permanent positions. Afterwards, most of them still keep in touch with their employer – what is interesting is that they primarily build up private networks during their employment. This points to a strong improvement potential of the companies in the direction of later retention Employees.

Because more than 70 percent of the “high potential interns” only stay in touch with the company through private contacts. Alumni networks hardly play a role, however, only 17 percent maintain them after an internship. 23 percent are no longer in contact with their employer after their internship.

The team and the structure are important!

Most important for the interns are factors like Networking/Teambuilding, mentoring and follow-up internships. Autonomous task completion or welcome packages are less important for job satisfaction.

In addition, most junior workers are interested in a structured employment relationship. This is primarily offered to interns in the pharmaceutical industry. On a scale from 1 (very structured) to 5 (not structured at all), companies from this segment achieve a value of 4,02, followed by trading companies (3,98) and employers from the automotive industry (3,96).
