Anxiety dominates ours Society. In principle, it is not a bad thing to be careful. Because only what we consider conceivable is possible. Unfortunately, our fears often slow us down.
Offt decide ourselves, what works and what doesn't. A friend recently sent me one while on vacation eMail: “The weather is great here. And the landscape is really a dream. Only the others get on my nerves. I think some people always have to complain. ” The latter is one thing that I notice very often:
Many people see the negative things rather than the positive. The sun is still shining, but to be on the safe side, we talk about the fact that it will rain tomorrow. Actually we lie with our Projects but well on schedule. But will we really finish in time? Or: At the moment everything is going great at work. But there will definitely be another economic crisis soon – and then…
To say it in advance: to see hair in every soup or to be afraid is quite useful. In fact, that is human Brain even geared towards perceiving negative things more than positive – and so they often stick in the memory for a longer time. However, it is important that thought is followed by purposeful action.
You already notice: So that the fear and worry creates something productive, then you have to turn the thing also positive.
Ultimately, positive thinking is what gives your fear productive wings to take action.
The problem is that many naysayers do not take exactly this step: rather, they remain in the state of perpetual pessimism. Negative thinking becomes an end in itself. There should be people who do that Fun might. Others go around aimlessly, brooding and doing nothing, constantly worrying about something they can't do anything about anyway. In extreme cases even to the point of complete inability to act, if initial concern gradually turns into panic because, for example, small Problems generalized (“The Welt is bad”) and thus hopelessly exaggerates.
And for some, it is precisely the inability to act that is the (unconscious) Objective: They are pessimists out of phlegmatism. Because according to the motto "I can't change anything about it anyway" they prefer to leave it as it is. Kind of like another friend of mine recently: “I would love to blog. But who cares what I have to write.” A little more positive thinking and belief in your own abilities would be there for sure no harm.
This has also been scientifically proven: the American psychologist Jeff Galak from Carnegie Mellon University exposed 30 students to an unpleasant noise. He told some that they would hear the noise again, for the others the experiment was over. Then everyone should rate the noise.
It turned out: the first group perceived the noise as clear more disruptive – and would be willing to do three times more Money spend so as not to have to hear it anymore. Galak's conclusion: Apparently, pessimistic prepare People not only mentally prepared for the worst - they also see the past much more negatively and thus spoil the fun and joy of an activity. And then rather leave it as it is. A pity.
One can easily overcome his fears of spiders, job loss, the financial crisis or similar things.
Sure, some fears are justified, others are simply exaggerated and obstructive. How to get rid of them, for example, I discovered a few years ago when Ziplining in Whistler, Canada: You just have to get started:
I'm not a fan of extreme sports. Although I have no fear of heights, nevertheless Ziplining was for me the purest self-overcoming, especially after a few years earlier in Kenya I almost had a riding accident.
There you stand up there on these platforms, look down and know that you will be hanging on two ropes for kilometers over the abyss. This is especially scary because here in Whistler the zipline trail stretches across the valley.
The worst thing is actually the moment of terror in which you push yourself to get it started. Once you're in the air, it's even very nice: you have time to admire the landscape in free flight, to take pictures and videos. If only this panic were not there!
This is like in many other situations too: The biggest fears cause the head cinema. Once you're done doing it, it's only half as bad. What's more, happiness hormones spread, it makes you feel intoxicated because you've made it. Therefore: less pondering, just do it.
But how does that work? Maybe sunglasses will help? We should put them on because of the wind, says our guide from the Company “Superflyziplines”. "That will definitely save you," says the Canadian colleague with a lot of gallows humor.
Seriously: Humour is a great thing for dealing with anxiety. Just laugh a little about yourself instead of brooding forever!
In fact, at the end of the day, my heart almost slipped on my pants: on a very short, steep track, you're racing through the treetops with 80 KM / h.
One has the impression, as if one could pop any moment against a tree. And inevitably worrying whether you will not end up shooting over the target. At that point, I was glad to be down safely again. Some fears are just right!

Super site and Panic and Anxiety Disorders is a very important, widely underestimated topic. Thank you for the treatment. I really always like being here.
I just want to say thank you for a wonderful contribution!
It has always been very difficult to find appreciative work with a handicap. Nowadays it gets more and more complicated. So I am glad that there is your blog. Thanks for that!
A clever, well-organized site that you have here.
Very interesting article, dear Simone Janson, persisting in fears and negative thinking often has an additional self-reinforcing effect. In my opinion, it helps to have honest and loyal friends who say, "Hey, you can ...". That is exactly the problem with disgruntled people, being able to hear and accept it. As children, we still naturally assume positive thinking. I recently had an interesting lecture about how often toddlers fall down and keep trying to get up. In the end, we all manage to stand and run.
Dear Ms Dittmer,
Thank you for your great comment.
