A panel discussion on the subject of “Quality Journalism: New Claims and Old Values” took place this evening at the Heinrich Böll Foundation in Berlin. On the podium sat Mathias Urbach, head of taz.de, Renate Gensch from the Federal Board of Directors of the German Union of Journalists and Journalists - and I as the representative of the Institute for Communication in social media (ikosom).
The discussion, which was moderated by Alice Ströver, cultural politician of Bündnis 90/Die Grünen, dealt with requirements Vocational Training and working conditions in times of publishing crises, newspaper deaths and Web 2.0. The event was streamed live, the video will then be published on Best of HR - Berufebilder.de® can be found.
The publication “Changing Public Spheres – Media, Internet, Journalism”, in which my colleagues Karsten Wenzlaff and Anne Hoffmann from the Institute for Communication in Social Media also contributed and the contribution “Digital revenue models for journalism: Pay voluntarily?” Have written.
Alice Ströver had already made it clear in advance that she wanted to discuss the topic in a very practical way and therefore asked the provocative question right at the beginning as to why no journalist had discussed the Problems reported at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport.
This was followed by a lively exchange of blows, especially between Mathias Urbach and Renate Gensch, among other things about working conditions and journalistic quality in publishing houses.
This discussion showed for me quite clear, how institutionalized the media industry is in Germany - and that the Internet in this context must and will lead to far greater structural changes than many people realize today.
Incidentally, the surprise of the evening for me was Mathias Urbach, who, as editor-in-chief of a national daily newspaper, admitted that no media company really has a clue as to how people really work on the Internet Money earned.
The quality of journalism always says something about the quality of democracy. This is currently shown by the example of Hungary, as is also shown by the democracy movements in the Arab world. But what exactly does quality journalism mean? In some areas of Online-The media seems to be following the motto “the faster, the better” these days. Do classic quality criteria such as independence, neutrality or diversity still exist? Can the swarm intelligence of the Internet generate the necessary quality and thus take over the democratic function of journalism? To put it bluntly: Is every blogger also a journalist? We want to discuss the framework conditions journalists need with our panel guests from the fields of media studies, journalism and publishing houses and from company employee representatives. How does the journalism training deal with the situation that has changed due to numerous competing offers in the online sector What framework conditions do publishers need in order to maintain media companies - with fair wages? How does quality journalism become a selling point? The event is organized in cooperation with the state working group media, Bündnis 90/Die Grünen Berlin.
